Thinking about smoked mackerel for tomorrow.

            • Yesterday: crustless mini quiches (pea, courgette and red pepper) with salad.

Tonight: a pair of Meera Sodha recipes with leftovers for the freezer: baked onion bhajis and mushroom and walnut samosas. Again with salad.

              Plum tart maybe?

                • Is there a trick to griddling cabbage, Mr Bones? I tried it once and it was just very chewy and a bit rubbery. Neither tender nor crisp. Does it make a difference which variety?

                  • Snoop Puss . The griddle was very hot, sprinkle of flaked sea salt and a quick drizzle of olive oil (onto the pan) and slapped the cabbage straight down, just long enough for the outer to char. If it's on there a tad too long it goes soft. Maybe it's also down to size of cabbage and variety, I used a Hispi type (seed was mixed in the packet so don't know the name) but I've successfully griddled other open structure summer cabbages before so long as they're not too big and bulky.

                    • Nice simple salad tonight….freshly picked oak leaf lettuce and a tin of pilchards in tomato sauce ( almost our last one!) tumbled into it with a couple of sliced eggs.
Fresh bread with lashings of butter and then our strawberries for pud.
Maybe a couple of well earned beers too

If my husband had his way we would be eating pigeon every day as he is now ready to declare all out war on the local ones that sit on the electricity wires all day eyeing up our plants.

Today however has been smoked mackerel, a big mixed salad and fried up new potato slices with homemade mayonnaise. There was fresh bread as well but neither of us managed any of it.
