  • It's all very weather dependant ....last year the ones at the lottie never got staked or side shooted just the occasional comfrey feed and did way way better than the pampered ones at home , but the year before it was the other way round ..

    • It was yesterday, but I sowed six different types of lettuce in a windowsill thingy. Some seeds are quite old so it's just an experiment to see if they'll germinate. I got a set of 3 x 24 hole windowsill propagators from ALDI last weekend for something like £2.99 - just what I needed.

I sowed rocket, Red Iceberg, Webbs Wonderful, mixed salad leaves, Jack Ice and lolla rosso.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

        • Todays sowing -
          Calabrese Belstar
Sprouts - Churchill and Seven Hills
          Broad beans - white Windsor
          Leeks - Pandora
          Calendula
Yet more sweet peas - last year I discovered they can grow horizontally along a picket fence (thanks to advice from Aberdeenplotter) so my plan is to cover an entire 100 ft long fence with sweet peas this year)

          • The real question is: what do you do with the tomatoes? Do you make a lot of sauce and can it? Enquiring minds (with 30 tomato seedlings dotted around the house...) need to know!

            • Last year I had 19 plants and thought I was doing overkill! I'm always terrified there won't be enough

I made masses of chutney with my leftovers. It's great to give away and my favourite recipe is:

Smoky Tomato Chutney - Relish - Recipes - from Delia Online - Smoked Tomato, everyone's favourite. I have to ration what I give away as my husband goes mad!

We grew mostly Sungold last year. They are the best cherry type IMHO, this year am trying Zebra, Amish Paste and Alicante (free packet) . I just want a plate of mixed colour and size toms on a plate a la Jamie Oliver's recipe books!

                    • Today I sowed some calabrese. I then emptied the rest of the March sowings folder but couldn't find anything else I could reasonably sow. I sowed too much in February, there would be no room at all to grow anything on. So I now have to sit on my hands until April, when I can sow other things.

                      • So as I got my fingers burned with my early tom sowing is now a good time to module plant all the febuary and march seeds ?

                              • Yesterday night sowed some back up tomatoes for the checked seedlings that aren't progressing right. Maybe more March sun will get them right on track, but I've added some more seeds just in case.

Also sowed PSB, sprouts, some chard, sweet peas, two types of sunflower, marigolds, sorrel, lovage and tarragon.
