    • Motivational list for Sat/Sunday:

Pick berries (Straw, Tay, Logan, maybe Goose if I'm lucky), maybe a lettuce.
Weed (never ending) & a tidy up around the Rhubarb.
Take the ball of twine & tomato feed to the plot (forgot last week) & use both.
Lift self-seeded Comfrey from the pallet collar strawberry bed & donate to plot neighbour.
Set up a new pallet collar bed (must remember the nice big cardboard box I saved to line the bottom) & plant up with spare cabbages.
Take some cash in case I need more compost from the shed shop to fill said pallet collar bed.
Swap collapsing net on cabbages in main bed with new frame nets - use current netting to protect new plants in new pallet collar bed.
Cut back the remaining third of the Comfrey & add to the 'wet bed' we're improving/resting until next year.

        • I have been thinking for some time about creating a YouTube channel to share my journey of growing vegetables and growing grapes and making wine. Tomorrow will be the day for sure and I will share so you can share your thoughts and provide me with some feedback.

Also discovered a huge bamboo cane growing from under the fence from the garden next door to the allotment, behind the woodshed. By huge I mean about 7ft tall.

There is an "allotment inspection" today, which apparently is just to check if any repairs are needed to fences etc. so most of yesterday was spent making sure the place was tidy. Chopped and dropped a large bolting lettuce and some finished peas to act as mulch around tomato plants.

                Wednesday jobs (weather permitting)
                Collect rain water
Decide how to deal with bamboo invasion

                • Oooo that bamboo is a nuisance! I'm sure you'll have seen the 'horror' pics etc. where people inspired to an 'instant garden' transformation unwittingly planted the wrong sort & it's attempting to take over the world.

A root barrier like you did with your raspberries is likely to be the best solution but unfortunately you'll need to go about 3 foot down for it to help. Maybe a timely discovery with the plot inspection? Something you could raise & see if they might help with the cost of the barrier or a bit of labouring help?

                  • My dad had two types of bamboo growing, the bad one escaped the metal barrier after about fifteen years, started coming up in the lawn meters from the plant & it easily pulls apart in segments. The good bamboo has 7 ft sticks, very good for plant stakes & doesn’t root like a mad thing or easily break apart. I hope you have the handy bamboo cane the other type is too spreading underground.

                    • I mentioned the bamboo to the councillors who came to do the plot inspection but they couldn't really offer any help except to say that I was within my rights to cut back or even apply weedkiller to anything that encroached on my plot, or I could contact the house owner and ask them to remove it. I am hopeful that it may be the good sort of bamboo as it has been there several years and this is the first time it has come under the fence - it is coming up about an inch from the fence itself. I have cut the cane down and I will have a go at digging out the bit that is my side of the fence, but I don't think I'm going to have much success as the fence was put on top of the old leylandii tree stumps, which are probably still there. Digging down any depth for a barrier is also going to be impossible without massive alterations that are completely beyond me - the gap between the fence and the wood shed is only about 18" and the one between the shed and the fence is about a foot. There is also a very small (3 inch?) gap between the fence and the IBC container and the blackcurrant and gooseberry are in the way:

The bamboo starts at about the edge of this photo and runs almost to the hedge at the side of the plot.

Asking the house owner to do anything is not a good idea - they were the most vociferous objectors to removing the hedge and planted as many fast-growing tall plants as they could to replace it. Contacting them about it is likely to be counter-productive.

I will just have to keep an eye on it and remove what I can as soon as it appears, like the horsetail.

                          • The home owner might know the variety name of bamboo,if it’s an invasive type they’d want to know it’s escaped any barrier, then they should panic if it’s an invasive type,it could travel under the patios etc, more of a problem for the houses. They should choose to remove it all if so. Talking about it with them might help, they should be neighbourly about this

Good point. I will have to see if I can summon up the courage to go and talk to them! I remember from the discussions about the hedge that these particular people were being very obstructive. The council agreed to allow the hedge between the allotments and the road to grow an extra 2ft higher to try to pacify them.
