  • What I Did Today Archive 2009

    Things I did today.
This is intended to act as an aid memoir to everyone on the grapevine. I hope it will help remind us of tasks that should be carried out at the time of year each posting is written.
It is not intended to be a Blog or a journal but simply an aid to help. I hope everyone will post what they did in their garden or allotment each day.

You're not making him sleep in the garden are you? Sorry, couldn't resist!

Got the bike out today after an enforced lay off because of frosty weather (Once came off a motorbike on black ice.........NOT recommended!)

After pedalling to allotment had a good session bricklaying........progressed with my cold frame constructed from breeze blocks i dug up in the allotment when it was derelict!
Thirsty work so numerous cups of coffee were called for. I usually frequent the nearby chippie for some scran but it was closed today so I decided to sample my own produce. I boiled 3 freshly laid eggs and they were gorgeous (used an old jam jar I had lying around as an egg cup!)

Anyway.......after sorting the chooks and collecting eggs I headed for home. I must have looked a reet sight with my woolly hat with earflaps and pompom blowing in the wind on the downhill stretch.

Note to myself.........must get fit as the ride home nearly killed me!

After buying a bargin compact greenhouse from the woolies closing down sale for 3(brought 2 but only put one up) and had to ask for help to put it up, cos i was getting in a right tangle doing it myself. My OH did it in 5 minutes!!!!!

I then decided to have a general tidy up in the garden.

And also tried to sort all my plant pots out gathered them altogether and put them in one place in the corner of the garden

Then put all the things i wanted to inside my makeshift greenhouse and then decided it was too cold and came in and said i should have gone out earlier when the sun was shining.

Still lots more to do and sort out but will have to do some day by day...

Dug up all my errant rasberries that have been growing wherever they wanted, and transplanted them into the raspberry area.
Started digging over the last raised bed that needs doing.
Another 20 minutes of shovelling horse poo into the second compost bin.
          How cold???

Hacked one of my wild blackberry bushes to death. Well, into a coma anyway, I have no doubts it will be back.
Started to dig over the bed for my leeks and carrots this year. Dug about a third before the cold forced me to retire.
Had a chat over the back hedge with my neighbour Thierry. Hadnt seen him since I had come back home, told me we have snow inbound for Monday.

Dug over 3 large raised beds and dug compost in and also dug over and manured potato patch. Then pulled some leeks, swede and brussels which then became part of a roast dinner. Yummy!

Also brought back the last of the beetroot to experiment with turning into chutney...

Finished planting 'spare' tulip bulbs into tunnel border. Knocked out and re-potted all the lilies. Tidied out shed. Looked at greenhouse and decided it was too big a job for today. Went inside to warm up!

                          Yesterday:

Sorted through 20kg of peanuts by hand to pick out the ones that had goe mouldy. Iam keeping an eye on them for a couple of days to see if any more go mouldy if not I can start putting them out for the birds again.

                          So far today:

Erected polytunnel bought on ebay last november - extremely pleased it is much larger than anticipated and was easy to put up on my own.

                          Next to do today:

Sort out seeds and get come started in my new heated propagator and some in my normal propagators (i guess I wont be eating dinner off the dining room table for some months now).

Binned some chilli plants i had in porch, just too cold for them and seemed to be infested with white fly, brought in strawberry runners (planted in own pots in summer),put into porch, got to be warmer than outside, heating up some compost in electric propergator for early toms (an experiment as i have loads of seeds), sorted out lean too on side of house (also known as gardening dumping ground by OH) and ordered some white tomato seeds off ebay.
Life isnt about surviving the storm.....But learning to dance in the rain.
