      • Sowed some tomatoes, sweet peppers and chili peppers.

Ate some home grown spuds for tea.

Put last week's onions that have now germinated into the greenhouse.

        • Good Luck louisesgarden! Trousers won £4 something on the Christmas Day Lottery?!

Anyway.... we bought some Charlotte Tatties to chit for The Funny Farm Kitchen Garden today, which has made me really excited for the growing year ahead now. And I managed to pick up a very dark red dahlia tuber at Homebase. Hugely YES!

Trousers put up some curtain rails in the kitchen for me this afternoon (magnificently straight - thanks Angel. X) and I've been learning, all on my lonesome, just how to make a Roman Blind, I think... because I finished making a 2.5m tall velvetty curtain for the front door on Christmas Day whilst Trousers was cooking lunch (!)

          Thank you for listening.

          • Yesterday went down the lottie and erected the bird feeding station I had bought with my christmas money. Harder than it sounds as the ground is still frozen solid. Started off a compost dalek with some rotted manure (just to weigh it down). Annoyed at the weather (I know it should be expected in winter) I haven't been able to do anything on my second half plot as it is frozen, I've had it 3 weeks now and it still looks the same as when I took it over. • I bought a reduced box of clementines just before Christmas. Nobody wanted to eat them so I have turned half into Clementine Marmalade and tomorrow I will chutney the rest.

              • Having finished my Roman Blind for the kitchen window, I fancied a change from curtain-making today, so took one of my Biodynamic Christmas Prezzie Books up to 'Wellie Towers' for a soak in the bath, and a bl@@dy good read this morning - and that has completely fired me up now for growing in my new Funny Farm Kitchen Garden.

So, after I went out 'panic-buying' for filling Trousers' and my cats' tummies between now and Noo Year (I can live on dust?) on account of the fact that we're allegedly getting snowed in over Noo Year? I settled down in our kitchen to plot my Biodynamic Sowing, Growing and Harvesting Year for 2010 on the calendar I bought for the very purpose.

I couldn't care less if we get snowed in for a month now, because I've got a lot of planning of what to sow, hoe, tend, prune and harvest for each of my four crop categories.
Completely wonderful day today, that will kick-start the rest of our year.X

                • Now............where to start? I had a cracking day at the allotment today getting everything done that I'd planned to do.

Took a bag of logs that I'd saved as offcuts from my pallet stripping excercise a few weeks ago. Borrowed a big axe and chopped some seasoned logs I've had for ages as well to warm me up initially.
Fired up the woodburner in my main greenhouse so I could spend a day working inside.

After feeding chooks with some bread and corn and collecting eggs I set too with my planned projects.
First job was to decant the 5 gallon of paraffin I'd bought into gallon containers to make it easirer to pour. Filled up my paraffin heater and also a paraffin stove which I haven't used for a while.
After tidying all he stuff off it, I Dismembered a workbench I have at one end of greenhouse and set it up at the other end. This will give me more room around my stove to get warm.

Chopped down my tomatillo plant which was in a large tub in the corner and put it in with the chooks to peck at. It must have had approximately 500 tomatillo's on it but each one was only the size of a pea.
Next job was to re-site my Cabernet Sauvignon grapevine. I had it in a large container but thought it would be better planted in the corner of the greenhouse. Had to break up a paving flag and dig a large hole with BFB added (its all I had and should have really been bone meal only) Untwined andpruned the vine to three leaders and replanted it. Hopefully it will be happier there than last year which only produced a few grapes.
Next job was to take all the dead pepper plants from a high rise shelf i have.
Managed to salvage a few chrysanthemums plants from outside that were already potted and brought them in to produce cuttings for next year.
Tidied the raised bed I have along one side and brought in some potted ball headed spring cabbage plants I had in another greenhouse.
Kept a few potted Jalapeno plants to see if they survive the winter indoors..........don't hold out much hope for them , but you never know.

After firing up the paraffin stove & making a mug of hot chocolate I set to and sowed approximately 50 Golden Bear onion seeds in a tray. These will be taken home and put in the propagator. Pleased to see that there's still another 50 seeds in the packet which I may sow at a later date. At £1.45 for 100 seeds of an F1 I think these were very reasonably priced.

Next job was to have a good sweep up before transplanting about 60 grass leek plants into two trays.

Stoked up the woodburner, checked the paraffin heater and left for home a happy man!

(Appologies for length of post........got a bit carried away)

                  • Ooh I feel really ashamed now reading how productive Snadger has been today. We've had horrible icy cold drizzle all day so I've not done anything apart from walk the dog (it has to be done) and look at the spring cabbage planted in pots on patio.
Note to self :- I really must get motivated.

                    • The 'What I Did Today' thread is something of an institution on the Grapevine, having started and been run continuously since 2006. At nearly 7 years old (at the time of writing this) it had grown to over 300 pages, and was becoming difficult to browse. So we have decided to separate the posts into a thread for each year, and put them into the Archive for ease of use, keeping only the current and previous year in the active thread.

This thread is for 'What I Did Today', 2009
