  • Fergie day today. Spent all day trying to get the tractor hydraulics working. They now work fine and I did a little dance at a job welldone! was a bit worried as they haven't worked since I bought it, but with a bit of fettling and an oil change all is well!
Went to the allotment afterwards and collected 4 eggs and checked the chooks feed. Gave the bottom of the allotment crew some mixed corn to keep them warm but by the time I got to the top of the allotment the others were all tucked up in bed.
I've had a bit of a problem with rats trying to get into the runs lately but my preventative methods seem to have worked up til now...............thats until the rats figure out how to chew through corrugated tin sheeting!

Hi Snadge, What do you think the rats are after? I am trying to relate it to another topic on the vine.

          • I actually did something in the garden today, 1st time in what seems like weeeeeks! Potted up 12 free bare rooted trees/tiny twiglets (aquired through local council giveaway), potted up 6 Heuchera (early xmas pressie from parents), binned 2 deceased red robin tomato plants, picked last of cherry toms & chillis (made chillis into sweet chilli sauce), planted shallots in veg patch.
            Jane,

                • when I got home from a rain and wind sodden weekend in a caravan I heard that a frost was due tonight in the SW. Dedicated as I am the first thing I did was to go wrap the Damson Tree container in bubblewrap. My OH is laughing his socks off. He says damson are only £2. a pound fgs.

                  • Spent most of the day clearing ditches (and trying not to let the water get past the top of my wellies) then late this afternoon went to check on two field drains which flow into a drainage canal which is tidal, The canal has recently been scraped with a 360 digger and two field drains have been either broken or blocked.
The tide was in - I found one field drain and cleared it - no sign of the other, got my face ripped by a gorse bush when i lost my balance and ended up filling both wellies with freezing cold water - still can't feel my toes.
Never mind, heavy snow forecast for tomorrow - and what am I doing tomorrow - starting to cut my Christmas trees

                    • A bit of workshop time today, machining a 100 year old joist into a new mantle shelf for my daughters home. It looks grand all fitted.

                      • Piggie - you're s'posed to talk about what you did like 'Gardening' today DOH?!
And actually, ME NEITHER! because our back lawn is just a squidgy muddy mess, that if you just tread on it, you can feel the damage you're doing to it, so there's absolutely no point.
This Autumnal Season is teaching me a lot about my new garden.
Certainly, I'm going to have to build a few raised beds, which I'd hoped I wouldn't have to. It's a learning curve throughout the seasons with a new plot, and it will dictate to you... not the other way around!
However, I'm very adaptable, and I will endeavour to garden according to its' needs.

Did the Mantle look gorgeous?! X

                        • Braved the icy weather to go and check on the lottie. Grieved the loss of the broad beans (all of them ) to mice. Hung up bag of straw in shed hopefully away from mice. Not really much else we could do as too cold and ground frozen solid. Then came home for a nice cup of tea and a big slice of Banana and Walnut cake (homemade of course! ).

By now I presume you have enjoyed your dinner, warmed yourself up and reflected on a days work well done.
