What I Did Today Archive 2011

Created a new bed ready for my leeks on the new lottie. Now sick of couch grass,. That took pretty much most of the day. Then went to t'other one to harvest some raspberries , had a visit from a cat who had brought along his catch of the day. Cat then wandered off leaving catch of the day behind. Clever cat for catching a mouse not so clever leaving it for me to get rid of.

Today I started to repot my carrots, purple sprouting brocli, and cabbages. Also I genrally tidied the garden and cleaned the greenhouse.

Not the best thread to offer advice on, Emma but carrots are best sown direct. If you transplant them, you'll more than likely end up with forked roots - whilst they may be useable, sometimes they're just a tangled mess.

Busy weekend!

Picked (with kids) redcurrents, gooseberries, and tasted first blackcurrents.

Dug new potatos (arran pilot to compalinst from cook - she says all new potatos muts be waxy, but I disagree)
Picked Broad Beans Imperial Green Longpod - more to come over next 2 or 3 weeks. 2 and 4 year old like these
Picked salad
Picked first beetroot - Botlhardy - about 5-7 cm diameter - sweet and delicious - 4 year old likes these.
Picked Courgette - Defender and Soliel. Quite delicious - but neither child lieks them.
Mowed lawn.
Weeded in among interplanted leeks and carrots, and salad bed. Removed bolted rocket.
Moved cucumbers (burpless tasty green) into cold frames and growbags. Moved PSB with them (Claret and Rudolph). A little water and slug pellets.

Noticed slugs had eaten basil that was ready for transplanting.
Removed armpits from outdoor tomatos. Some have flower trusses already.
Watered pot soft fruit.
Watered courgettes and potatos that are all under plastic.
Picked strawberries and tayberries. Soft fruit eaten with home made meranges and some frozen blackberries left over from last year.

Seems old year - soft fruit very advanced, but everything else slow.

Thanks for the advice Chris I know now for next time, I did sow some early carrots directly so hopefully they will still turn out, even if my other carrots do not.

Weeding! *sigh* so much weeding...

- weeding
- potted on yet more tomatoes
- tied in more climbing French beans
- weeded, then sowed more carrots. Very disappointing, patchy germination
- furtled up some tatoes, really big ones
- picked all the blackcurrants - very disappointing, only 100g this year. Got another kilo of strawbs tho
- composted lots of cornflower & poppies that the wind's knocked over, and staked the best sunflowers
- cut & edged the lawn, filled up the home dalek with 8 buckets of weeds & gone-over flowers
- at school we released the butterflies
- and harvested our spuds (pathetic crop, as expected really)

Ooh forgot, I furtled and didn't find anything! Lots of foliage, but can't find any spuds.

Weeding, weeding, weeding. In between that lot I managed to pick one and a half pounds of gooseberries, ate several pods of peas and some raspberries plus two strawberries. Had a furtle but couldn't find anything so will leave the spuds for a bit. Oh, and binned one of the broad beans which had blackfly (loads of them, but only the one plant )

I just wish they'd hurry up RL, I need the space for other veg! Weeded out the unsuccessful strawberries, will fertilise it tomorrow so I can put some more in.
DID NOT WATER THE TOMATOES being as how I've near lost them through drowning! Did water the pumpkins and the courgettes.

ate some raspberries, sowed some more fennel and turnips. planted my stripetti squash at the plot and my spare patty pan. thinned my gooseberry bushes, and used the thinnings to make some chutney.

Disappointingly some of my spinach has bolted- managed to pick enough leaves for a meal then left the tray to sort out tomorrow

Spinach won't grow well in trays!!
