I used to hide behind hair and make-up. Now I don't have any hair, seldom wear make-up and, for the first time ever, I actually feel attractive.

Oh don't get me on makeup, don't understood why so many people plaster the stuff on with a trowel. Have never met anybody that doesn't look better with a natural look and wouldn't be able to find the time to put n and take off anyway. When they do those stats on how much the average woman spends on cosmetics I always think that somebody is spending a heck of a lot as they have my share.

My mum is a mature lady who has lovely long dark hair and hardly any grey all natural she often gets compliments I say keep it and flaunt it.

In brief... insecurity, low self-esteem, an earnest desire to hide and unquestioned beliefs that I was as ugly as sin, in my case... amongst many, many other things. The greatest love of all" is not -at the risk of contradicting George Benson and Whitney Houston- "easy to achieve" at all. Learning to love myself is still a work in progress for me but, yeah, shaving my hair off has afforded me a level of self-acceptance I doubted I'd ever arrive at in this lifetime. No idea why but I suspect it has something to do with having nowhere to hide.

Glad you've got there Yasai . I'm not particularly confident in how I look but always thought makeup and clothes terrifying when I was growing up. There always seemed to be a huge rule / instruction book which I hadn't been given. I do know that if I put full makeup on I'd almost certainly get it wrong which as a teenager would have been far worse as people could have pointed and laughed at something I'd done therefore undermining my work if you see what I mean as I'd stand out as looking different to how I should look. Don't really care now I've hit middle age, likes too short as it is. That said I am genuinely confused by the current trend to remove your eyebrows and stick a dead slug above your eye that seems to be en vogue at present, surely makeup should enhance your appearance?!?

Just to be clear, I didn't find clothes themselves terrifying and run around naked - that would have been too much! More the thought of choosing clothes.... Wanted to clear this up in case anybody jumped to conclusions

Good for you yasai. I've never met you, but I know you're a lovely person from your little letters with seeds. If you have a beautiful heart, its shows on the outside too. Makeup and fancy clothes are just disguises, its what's within that matters

Ah a hair thread!
Just before Christmas one of my best friends was diagnosed with breast cancer, I have long, super thick hair and am considering whether to chop it all off for charity. Literally to a grade 4 shave off!
As well as raising money for the shave off, I could then donate my hair to make wigs for cancer sufferers.
I am scared though.
But it will grow back and I will be doing a good thing.....
My friend has said that she will give me one of her head scarves as I will be cold when it's done lol!
I'm sure that I will do it, just need to be brave!

Thanks Eyebrows... I KNOW! It's gone from one extreme to the other. When I was little, I couldn't understand why women plucked their brows to within an inch of their lives. Now, I'm equally perplexed. Baffling.
