I remember my nan converting 'new' money back to 'old'. Remember he standing in a shop and saying very loudly "I'm not paying 5 shillings for THAT"

We used to buy 6 of chips, which was 6 old pennies for a portion (2.5p) Now they are �1.90 per miserable portion. I cant be bothered to work it out but i am sure potatoes havent gone up that much.

My dad sent me into town for a piece of 3x2" titite wood, the local hardware shop were mistified, we do pine, oak and mahogany he said but i have never heard of titite. When I told my dad he burst out laughing, placed one finger on his nipple and said thats titite.

was only saying recently,i remember going to the then corner shop for a loaf of bread 1 shilling,or 10p these days,that was aprox 45 years ago,our 1st house was 2500,00,46 years hence,time has a habit of flying and costs rising,ma used to say about my sister kicking up a fuss over 1 farthing as a kid,

I remember when petrol was 4 shillings and thruppence (21p in new money) per gallon. Esso did a promotion and gave away a tiger's tail and reduced the price to three and eleven pence. Wowsers. Get done for cruelty to tigers nowadays

Not only was the fuel cheaper, the attendant would check your oil, wipe your screen and blow up your tyres if you wanted. We are supposed to be better off nowadays but sometimes i doubt it.

I suspect a lot of the chaps will remember 10d for a pint of mild in the tap room, 11d for bitter. Add a penny for the lounge.

I doubt it to sometimes Bill, then I look at my wages slips for 1971/72 and as a 25 year old fully qualified plumber I came out with less than �20 for 40 hours. Had to work a 41/2 hour Saturday morning to break �20. Then we got a rise to 51p an hour and the boss cut the overtime, that's when I left the stingy bu99er.
