  • Good morning.

I was wide awake at about 3am, but managed to drop off for a few cat naps then. I eventually got up about half an hour ago. It's bright sunshine here again and 7°C. It should be climbing into the twenties later.

You'll have to train Hibou to collect snails for you, Nicos.

    • Thanks MH…I planted a few out in a 35cm wide tub yesterday and wondered if I’d put enough in…about 12 of them…given what you say about spacing, should I thin them out? ( Having a bit of a panic now)

      • No, they'll be fine. I've done the same with my left over ones, 12 in a 40cm pot. I did it last year too and they were very happy, because they were watered and fed. I had to support them, though as the tops pushed each other as they grew and branched out.

              • Morning all.

What a lovely girl Hibou is. And your focaccia sounds good, mothhawk. What cheese do you use?

Lovely start to the day here again. Bright sun at the moment, though we're forecast wall to wall thunderstorms but not much rain. I've looked at the long-term weather forecast and we've got two dry days between now and 24 May, which is as far as the forecast goes. You'd think we were in the Lake District this year.

Guests leaving early afternoon. Not sure what I'll do after. The sensible plans would be get some herbs sown, maybe some French beans, or even do a bit of work. But more likely than not I'll have a long nap, say sixty winks.

                Have a great day, everyone.

                • Sixty winks sounds wonderful Snoop!…I may well partake in that activity too later

We had a quick nip to the vide Grenier and came back with some old wooden step ladders…the A shaped type which are about 8’ high. The intention is to grow sweet peas up them. Not bad for 6€ ?
We’ll just paint them first with brown Cuprinol to help preserve them.

We are also due thunderstorms later. It’ll be good if we have a lot of rain in that it’ll help loosen some of the weeds in the driveway. We have one particularly horrible one which I need to ID.
II’ll turn to you guys if I may if I can’t work out what it is?

Clearly time to have a brew…pity I don’t have any cake to go with it

                  • I ended up having about 10 winks…but then decided to do some baking seeing as we have rain forecast - and on final count we had …54 eggs

So I’ve made a creme caramel and a Dorset apple cake…so that’s 8 used up.

Thing is….I made a bit of a booboo I added loads of cinnamon into the Dorset apple cake as per usual then remembered OH asking if I could make it with more cinnamon next time…. So I sprinkled about 1/3 teaspoon over the chopped apple before pressing it into place…then got a waft of piri piri spice
Too late…I decided to carry on and add it! Should make for interesting eating
OH loves spices so I’ve told him this is a slightly different recipe and it’ll be interesting if he can judge exactly what it is.

Am just wondering if he should have his first sample after a curry

                    Oh dear

                    • ^^^ just thinking…if it is a bit too spicy, I’ll make gf’s chocolate sauce to pour over it for a pud as we both love chilli chocolate!

I used what I had in the fridge, my cheese staple, Red Leicester, grated and thickly sprinkled over the top of the dough.

Nicos, I think the piri piri seasoning would be quite nice in a cake - if it wasn't for the garlic! Ginger, yes, oregano, yes, chili, yes, paprika, hmm, garlic, yuck, no!

                        • Thanks, mothhawk. I must admit I wondered if you might have added cheese to the dough as well. Good to know.

As for the cake... my initial thought was it might go quite nicely with a soup or cheese. But I guess it depends on how sweet it is.

Just noticed the birds at home are much noisier than in the country. Googled it and it’s a thing. Who knew! x
