I live in a very old stone house with small windows and even they are shuttered Lottie- so downstairs only reached 24C - so guess where we hid for most of the day?
No idea how locals in modern houses cope!
We’ve just been sat outside and it was delightful…a cool 24C there at the moment.
Hope you turn the corner quickly with your throat . A very sensible idea to have a siesta…I’d of had one too but we had a friend staying ."Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

Good morning, anyone who is also struggling to sleep.
The temperature has actually fallen below 20°C but it feels very close and sticky. I feel very wide awake and am just wondering whether to make myself a coffee or not. It's probably not a good idea as I seem to be unable to drink coffee in bed without spilling it either in bed or on the carpet.
I've got a grory hop arriving this morning. Usually by about 6.30am I get an email letting me know if anything has been substituted or is unavailable. I do know that I sneaked a couple of boxes of the the Biscoff ice cream lollies onto the list at the last minute...... Well it would have been a shame not to when they were on offer
.
I was chatting to my brother in law on the phone yesterday. He was saying that he's thinking of cancelling his 4 times a day "carers". When I asked why he said that the only thing that they do for him is make him a cup of tea and they are incapable of making a decent cup and they can't speak English. I think I've convinced him to reduce the visits first, rather than cancel all of them. I don't think that the medical profession actually achieved anything in his 3 week hospital stay other than convincing him that he never wants to go back and, as he put it, there are fates worse than death.
I think I'll have a final go at dropped off to sleep now.

Morning all.
We're struggling this year, Nicos. Because it is so hot in the day and very warm at night (mid-twenties), the house isn't cooling down much overnight. Yesterday we hit 30 ºC indoors. Terrible. today is the day I finally move downstairs.
Hope you managed to get a bit more sleep, GF. I'd struggle to do that with the idea of Biscoff lollies going round in my head. They sound delicious.
Plenty of work to be getting on with today, but it looks like no cooking for three today, just the two of us. I think M up the valley is getting bored of watching Jack and talking about Jack.
Right, time to shut the house up, keep Mr Sunshine outdoors again. Another five or six days of this for us and then temperatures start to drop and, best of all, night-time temperatures will drop to the top teens. Hope we're all hanging in there.
Have a great day, everyone.Last edited by Snoop Puss; 01-07-2025, 05:44 AM.

Good morning again.
I managed another three hours of sleep
, and I know I was dreaming when Mr GF inadvertantly woke me up at gone 8am.
It's 21°C, not a breath of wind, and very cloudy. It looks as if it could rain but according to the forecast there is a negligable chance this morning, and less than a 50% chance this afternoon.
My Sainsbury's delivery is due between 10am and 11am. There's only one substitution. No Galia melons, so I'm getting a different sort.
I hope you've managed more sleep and your antibiotics are starting to work, Lottie.
Time for more coffee.

Good morning all...12 degs here and it's cloudy.
Not a lot to report so catch up later.
Lottie, I hope you feel better soon.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Mornin n’alln’all
Heating up here too already 28C outside.
We’ve had all the doors and windows open too since 5.30 am (Hibou demanded to go out)…good job were in the middle of nowhere- we’d have been a wonderful attraction to a burglar elsewhere!
Got the house down to a chilly 15C, and now safely shuttered to keep the sun out.
A small through draft from back door to bedroom window has created a lovely through draft. Can’t feel it tbh, but the scent of the sweet peas downstairs has been drawn up into the bedroom!
Indoor domestics today, plus some fruit picking and freezing, then a checkup at the vets this afternoon.( one of Hibou’s tablets is foaming in her mouth so we found an alternative, but I don’t know if the vet is able to get them for us due to contracts with providers/ suppliers- or if we can get them here online with a prescription from her.)
Last night an owl flew really flies to our heads whilst we were sitting outside yesterday evening enjoying the coolness. Lovely to see. Absolute silent flying.
Enjoy your day peeps…remember to leave water out for the wildlife- including any goldfish in your birdbaths

Morning all.
Lottie, I do hope the antibiotics kick in soon and you begin to feel better.
I watered the tubs early on with the last of the water in the rain butt. When it got down to about a foot of water left the stream from the tap gradually turned to a trickle then stopped. I knew there was still water in there, but also knew there would be a lot of sediment in the bottom, so assumed that had clogged the tap.
I prised off the lid to find 17 snails all cosied up under the rim.
. Disposed of them and had an inkling what was clogging the tap. Sure enough, when I got the butt empty and on its side ( the raspberries should be pleased with all that lovely sludge from the bottom that I sloshed under them!), there was a snail in the tap pipe.
So now my water butt is cleaned out, free flowing, and ready for rain again. Good job well done!
After that I went to the library and got there just as it opened for Smart users at 8am, to get more books to read. Not much else to do in this heat.
Have a good day all, and don't forget the sunblock even if it is overcast, UV light laughs at clouds.

Our surgery is definitely on the ball these days. I've already had a call from them regarding yesterday's blood test and there's a prescription waiting for me at the chemist's.
I was searching one of my bookshelves this morning for Delia's Summer recipe collection as there's a recipe in there that I needed. I have discovered that I have two copies of both her Summer and Winter books, all from charity shops. I have now offered one copy of them to my niece. If she doesn't want/need them I'll donate them to the book table at our surgery.

.Afternoon all, spent most of the morning resting, aprox 2 hours for feet makover, thanks again for the good vibes, this heat heat only makes everything worse for everyone, still on mushy food, even wheeterbix feels like glass in my mouth at times, the infection must have go lower in the throat,it hurts to swallow,i can cope with bread soaked in warm milk, well mashed spuds, will try some soup later on,some things realy sting my mouth ulcers, same as salt water, even my own strawberry jam upset them,so very carefull what i can eat, don't know what is worse, the soreness or the fact my taste buds have been denighed what i WOULD like, ref carers, they suposed to get them somthing to eat if needed, not just supply tea, even just administer tabs to those who need it,i understood a couple of years ago that they are allowed 15 mins a visit,it would be better for him maybe as you said not cancel altogether, but reduce to what ever suits his needs,i also know from experiance that the lunch and tea time call, could only be a very short time, and getting up and going to bed can be anytime of the day,the system is not run to suit the true needs of the patient, soap box now put away,Snails what a find at least they surrendered with you hunting them,i have hardly seen any moluscs this year so far, then only under things that not been disturbed for a while, the cabbage whites are on patrol, stay cool everyonesigpicAnother nutter ,wife, mother, nan and nanan, love my growing places, seed collection and sharing, also one of these

Lottie, I know we can’t share medical advice on this forum as we aren’t medical professionals, but many moons ago I had terrible problems with a sore throat and mouth, and the only thing which eased it was using this before I ate…
https://www.boots.com/difflam-throat...bpygMS3BT-4OiD
( available at other large pharmacies I’m sure)
Pretty expensive but it took the pain away enough to allow me to eat.
Basically it’s a numbing spray
It wears off fairly quickly…but long enough to get some decent nourishment down me.
Might be worth asking your GP/ pharmacist if it would be safe for you to use, at least until the antibiotics do their trick?Last edited by Nicos; 01-07-2025, 07:52 PM."Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

Very jealous. We have to wait till Monday for 10 ºC lower daytime temps and night-time temps 6 ºC lower. But what a difference that will make.Originally posted by Nicos View PostAlmost bedtime and I’ve only just realised it’s July!!!

Looks like our temperatures are about to drop …10C lower both day and night. Yippee!
Hope you're all doing OK, guys. Especially you, LD.
