Chillies - growing and overwintering 2017

My overwintering is not looking promising... I *may* have entirely forgot to prune them, or water them. Hmmm... the numex twilight is green, leafy and going strong though!

I'm going to be fairly simple on the chilli front this year - on account of the fact I have yet to sow any, and I live in Leeds. Nothing wrong with Jalapenos though

PVC solvent weld wastepipe, tees and elbows Don't used the weld solvent.

Of coarse Trip, dead easy and cheap as chips!

Firstly it consists of using 21.5mm Pvc-u water pipe, and it's prevailing connectors, the stuff plumbers use, and available at all good DIY chain stores or even good local hardware stores which is where mine came from.

Here's a better overview to give you an idea!



The only reason mine is the size that it is, was to fit it around the wooden try beneath which I found a few of laying around at work, and the lights I purchased were more or less identical in size, more by luck than judgement!

The front, back and top cross section were 25" long (Old Money) and in one piece as they are only accommodating corner connections

But the sides have to be split into two to accommodate the T connections for the uprights which I choose to do at 9" each



I then drilled holes in the top cross section and inserted "Eye Bolts" to which then the S Hooks are inserted to hang the chain which will suspend the light.



Oh the uprights were 25" But you can build to any size needed really.

Honest! Easy Peasy, knocked mine up in 45mins, tools needed, an haxsaw an a decent drill with a sharp drill bit

You can glue it together, but I choose not to, as when not in use, you can take it apart for easy storage!

looking good deano ,thanks for sharing ,where did you get your light timer from ? i have one with the those little plastic clips that you push down when you want the light to be on and its rubbish ,i need a new one,cheers

Thanks everyone for sympathy after the feline related chilli disaster
And for encouragement to sow more seeds and try and catch up.

I had seedlings for 21 varieties at that time. 11 were lost, and I was particularly disappointed to lose the Congo Trinidad Yellow and Chocolate Habanero.

But I did manage to save 10 of them that had been lucky in the way they hit the floor. I also saved and repotted a few seedlings that had come out of their pots. They seem to have survived, but it will be a mystery for some time which ones they are.

I've also had 4 more varieties germinate since then, so my grow list of surviving varieties is now:

Barancio
Bishops Hat
Cheyenne F1
Elysium Oxide F7
Joe's Long Cayenne
Numex Sandia
Numex Twilight x Cayenne F2
Piccante Calabrese
Pot Black
Santa Fe Grande

Plus some 2016 plants that have been in the house for potential overwintering.
These now look like they will be surviving:

Cayenne Large Red Thick
Golden Cayenne
Orange Habanero

Plus a Turbo Alberto cross. This one survived several hard frosts in the cold greenhouse before I decided it had done more than enough to prove it wanted to survive and brought it indoors. It's now growing new leaves

I've just sown the latest edition to my little chilli family purple tiger.
Anyone else growing it ? I know nothing about purple tiger.

I grew it last year SP - its a very pretty variegated plant. I think its the same as the purple one Scarlet grew last year but a different name!

what size chillies? What's the heat like ?

Mine were small chillies - but I don't have a greenhouse and they ended up in the shade from mid-August when we moved house so I am not the best benchmark. I imagine they should be similar size to Jalapenos. Because they were so small mine were all dried and made into chilli flakes - the flakes definitely pack a punch but there were demon red and lemon drop thrown in there too.

After actually doing some gooooogleing of my own. Yes it is. Apparently it's called trifetti when the chillies have turned red ( well that's how I read it anyway? )
