  • Spring is a complicated season.

Astronomical spring starts on 21st March (or thereabouts), at the vernal equinox. However, this means that summer does not start until 21st June, which is a bit late for most people, and autumn starts on 21st September. I think most of us in the UK would agree that early June is usually more summer-like than late September.

Meteorological spring starts on the 1st March, with weathermen dividing the year into chunks of 3 months for the 4 seasons. In some years this can seem a little early.

Other countries have different dates to the start of spring - Ireland and the US (sometimes, depending on the groundhogs!) have it at the beginning of February.

          • My first lot of alpine strawbs have damped off. For some reason I've never sussed this seems to happen much more when I use MPC so I have bought some JI seed compost and re-sown in a nice clean tray.

                • Am just about to sow some 'sweet peas' in loo rolls, as directed by 'Grapes', and I wondered if I could also use those long cardboard tube that my coffee capsules come in? They are square but obviously could bend, but I wondered if the coating/colouring etc might affect germination, or ability to break down in ground?

Is it worth risking it? Anyone else tried this?

All thoughts welcome, off to my loo rolls now.

                  • Right, I have sown in my 'cheapo windowsill propagator', basil, toms, broccoli, peppers, cucumber, and sweet peas, in tubes.

Broad beans sown 2 weeks ago, in propagator, inside, are just beginning to come through!

                    • Sowed 4 cabbage Hispi seeds in the propagator and some carrot Nantes Frubund Fastcrop in a trough in the garage, the idea being to let them germinate indoors then move them outside. I haven't tried this before but the packet says sow February onwards. Last year the mid-February sowing didn't germinate until April, hence my attempt to speed things up this time.

                          • First seed sowing of the year for me, all in windowsill propagators ...

                            6 cells of dhalia yams
                            6 cells of inca berries
                            6 cells of wonderberry
                            6 cells of golden pearls
                            3 pots of ornamental grasses
                            10 cells of black strawberries
                            10 cells of yellow strawberries
                            10 cells of blue strawberries
10 cells of giant red strawberries
72 cells of wild white strawberries

Yes that does say seventy two wild white's - I need a total of 80 viable strawberry plants, with at least 60% of them shade tolerant

That's pretty much all my early sowing done, so unless I have a change of heart about anything, no more sowing for about 6 to 8 weeks now
