Certainly some kind of onion or leek with the looks of it. It reminds me of a vid I was watching the other night about a guy who grows champion leeks.

At the end of the season he cut the foliage back and grows the stump on to obtain leek grass for next years plants.

VC the reason I asked if it was edible is quite simple I know ........................................ very little or nothing about flowers. If you ever want to stump me ask about flowers might just be able to reckonise a rose.

You and LadyLottie are close enough Potty. They are leeks - from a veggie box. I used the top part and put the root end in water to see what would happen - knowing that if they had been cut from the soil they would resprout! Its fascinating to watch them sprouting as they do it from the inside out - if you know what I mean. Here's one just starting to sprout and another mystery veg alongside it! Any idea what that is?

As to the leeks this chap and he is a champion. Brings his leeks home from the show and picks the best ones. These are blanch leeks by the way.

He then cuts of the top of the leek just above where the white bit finish's. He then plants it in his poly tunnel and over a shortish period of time it sprouts. Eventually he ends up with a seed head on top of a single tall stem. Before the seeds are ready he crops them off with a pair of scissors much like a barber cuts hair. This then forms a ball like structure of leek grass. The really funny bit was when he was ready to use this he soaked it for 24 hours in a solution of 50/50 bleach and water.

I'm going to plant the sprouting leeks to see what happens next. Whether its possible to keep them going, even though they had no roots to start with

Yes, actually I did wonder if the leek was grown from the base part (i've thought of trying this myself before now but now you've proved it can be done, VC)

Is the other plant celeriac?

I have no idea celeriac? Possibly way off with this one!

I have rooted a pineapple though

Its either fennel, celery or celeriac as they're all on the go at the moment - as well as carrots, sweet potato and turnips. Beetroot sprout as well Some cabbage sideshoots have rooted too.
I can't bear to throw them away without seeing if they'll root.
