I bought purple potatoes once and they were horrible, really starchy and no flavour. Am going to grow carrots for the first time in 2013 so will be on the look out for different colours

Sorry, it doesn't appeal to me. Anything purple goes in the compost bin..................unless they are plums..............

I can think of lots of reasons why you may choose to grow something a bit different but tell me in what way you think coloured veg are preferable (or not) to standard varieties.
But "standard" carrots weren't originally orange but deep red, they only turned orange when bred so as a patriotic act by Dutch nurserymen in 17th century (see also their football team colours!)

Is it not beneficial if the 'five a day' are five different colours? There's an excuse to grow dodgy coloured veg!

I grow white beetroot too and it tastes great and as mentioned, doesn't stain but apparently the chemical that gives purple beetroot it's colour has better health benefits so I grow those too.

Iv'e tried the purple mange tout and purple haze carrots and i didnt like the taste of these at all. I tried some white carrots and i liked them.
Next year i'm going to try the light green podded mange tout. (only so i can see them on the plants easier)
