Pinch out the flowers, they will not be bitter tasting but more liable to spoil as the flower stem starts to rot, depending on the number you are growing it is possible to peel the shallots and take out the stem.

              I've merged 6 threads on flowering/bolting onions/shallots.

For info - there's lots of it so have a read above of what to do next.

                Hi

I planted some onion sets red baron about March ish and one of them had a flower bulb on so I picked it off. Does this mean then my onions are bolting? never grown them before so no experience whatsoever

                thanks for any advice

No, they are flowering. They flower in their second year, which this is if they are grown from bulbs.

I'll find the other flowering onion thread and merge yours in with that one, for advice and guidance, and opinions.

tempted to join the club and start a new thread just to ask if my onions are flowering, but won't .......

how long will the winter onions store for if they've flowered?
and how long if they haven't?

i'm off to the lottie tonight to pull some up - got about 100 up there, noticed some were flowering last week ......

                        Has my onion bolted?

I have some Red Karmen onions which were grown from sets in the raised bed. One of them has a triangular looking "thing" growing at the top of one of it leaves Is that a seed head and if so do I ditch the onion?

Yes, it's the flower head. I just snap it off. The onion is still fine to eat when you pull them up.

It hasn't bolted, as onions naturally flower in their second year - but it is the flower head.

I'll just merge this with the others.

                              Autumn planted sets

I spoke to you last year. I have very bad white onion root rot so I tried planting autumn sets in grow bags, one outside all winter the other in my greenhouse, The one in my greenhouse produced about 25 big onions which I am just about to start to eat. The ones outside are tiny but still growing.
Bit of a success. Trying root rot resistant variety this summer in the garden. Will pass on results.
