If they are grown from last year's sets, they aren't bolting, they are flowering [that's what they do in their second year].

Nip the buds off and try and use those ones first.....

....or leave the flowers on and save the seed for next year

I'd leave the ones that are latest to flower, to flower myself, then you are taking a later flowering onion into the next generation.

              Bolting onions.

I have two patches of onions growing, one of which are red onions. The onion sets on both patches are growing well the leaves now about one foot high. However about six of the red onion sets are developing a flower head. Should I leave them alone and allow them to continue to grow, - should I just nip off the flower stalk and then leave alone or do i need to uproot each of the the complete flowering onion set and dispose of it? Your advice much appreciated.

                  Garlic growing flower shoots

                  Hello.

I tried twice to post this under growing techniques but my posts aren't appearing so trying here.

My garlic, planted last autumn, is growing well but is beginning to put out flower shoots. Is this usual? Should I remove them? I believe you can eat garlic flowers but will their growing affect the growth of the corms?

                  Thanks,
                  Penny.

Might be garlic scapes. Have a look at this thread

Your garlic is doing what garlic does. These shoots are called scapes. Remove them and eat them - they're very delicious.

Soon your garlic will start to die down and you'll know it's ready for lifting and drying.

Ah, OK. Thank you HotStuff. I thought that if I'd posted in the wrong place, the thread would be moved. Not a problem.

Thanks Compost Corner and Alice. I didn't know about garlic scapes. Will look at the link now.
