            • Coming to the last of my blueberries now, even the late varieties are done early this year. A few almost ripe greengages, that I couldn't resist and ate.
I keep walking around the tree squeezing the fruits, willing them to be ripe!

                • My rose rugosa is producing lots of hips already, I'm not sure when to pick them though. I know frost is supposed make them better but the birds will have had them by then.

What about picking and letting them ripen further indoors?

They're fully ripe once they start going slightly soft. Are you sure the birds will go after them, though? Rose hips are full of nasty itchy hairs which would irritate their mouths and throats.
Also, you can simulate frosts by simply freezing them yourself. That's the easiest way to deal with sloes and medlars, too, since the first frosts (especially those hard enough to actually freeze the fruit) are usually much too late if you live in the south of the country.

                      • All of my remaining carrots, since despite my best efforts the badgers are taking them by the dozen every night. They've had almost half of them already. I'll have to try and build some sort of fence for next year.

Also, more French beans, 5 mini cucumbers, two windfall pears, some blackberries, and some autumn raspberries (not really "autumn", are they?).

                        • ameno the blackbirds seem to like them, peck at the outer part.
They're red but not soft yet. Will wait a bit.
