What I did today 2024.

Moved brassica cage to the next bed along.
Erected pea frame and planted gutter sown peas.
Potted up tomato plants that a friends collecting.
Planted nasturtiums into containers and marigolds in GH borders.
Theres bound to be things I’ll remember later.

Took a day off from official work on Friday to work on the plot. Gave ourselves a rest day on Saturday then went back to it on Sunday.

We've finished digging over the top of the brassica bed to the full length we wanted to extend to & had a 'Time Team' moment again by unearthing 2 big patio slabs that were around a spades depth underground! They made a nice addition to the front of the shed That bed's now nicely raked over & liberally scattered with chicken manure pellets ready for planting next weekend. We also wired the fence down the left boundary of the plot so only have about 6ft left to do at the bottom (a couple more posts are needed which we need to buy first).

Good bit of hoeing & weeding around the place & added some more sparkly toy windmill thingies around the place to hopefully deter the birds. I don't like to net everything - I don't mind sharing a little, just not the whole crop. We did put a scaffold net cover over the cabbages to keep the cabbage whites away.

Planted out our Gigantes Beans. Hopefully they'll be ok as I've not grown these before - I'm told to treat them just like runners & at least 3 fellow plotters we met at the plot shop when we were getting canes made mutterings of it being too early to plant runners out yet & we should fleece them (which we didn't & probably won't). Must check Penellype's weather channel but am fairly hopeful we won't be seeing any frost in the foreseeable.

Tried very hard to restrain from watering as I'm sure we'll have some showers at least in the coming days. I did give the mangetout a drink as they looked like they needed it (a little floppy but not overly so) & OH insisted that the parsnip seedlings get some too.

I’ve put most of my broccoli 3” pots,resting together in their pots,in a large pot with three canes around the edge & net curtain over the top,tied with string. I have to use fine netting because of the diamond back moth laying eggs on them -

Planted out courgettes, coriander and flat leaf parsley.

Mowed the lawns.
Moved old sacks of potato compost down the garden to spread on the ground to fill out some dips.
Tied in perennial sweet peas, my annual ones haven't moved since I planted them
Put up codling and plum moth traps.

I have to use fine mesh because of the moth. Years ago I used wider hole netting with no problems. Depends if you get the moth. They don’t lay eggs in clusters like the cabbage white,they lay eggs singularly on the leaf edges,about two per leaf,the caterpillar things can hang off of the leaf edge from a webbing they make,they’re tiny….

I planted out the first container today with a jaune flamme tomato,petunia & French marigold. Then I worried about snails & surrounded them all with eggshells,it looks horrible but safe. I might go out there with a torch quickly…..

Dug over some more of my now rather grassy beds at the allotment, earthed up my potatoes for a second time, set up the frame for my outdoor tomatoes, and started emptying the compost bin and spreading it on the patch I had dug.
At home, I potted up some more sprouted bean seeds, along with sprouted squash and cucumber seeds.

Planted out the last few parsley and nasturtiums plants then potted on chard.

Its been raining non stop all day here,I’ve been sowing more runner bean & cucumber seeds in the kitchen

Watered some of the plants in one of the blowaways,they’re growing,difficult to fit them all back in. Leaves are getting eaten in there,I found two little snails. Found loads of snails the other night especially on the potato leaves.
