Mayan Gold Spuds!

Today I got lumbered with the shopping and spotted Mayan Gold spuds for sale! The blurb on the pack sounds interesting so I bought two packs, one for eating and one for planting.

Hope the family like the taste of them cos I'm committed (or should be!) now!

Has anyone had any dealings with them re taste, growing them? Early or maincrop etc?

So they're the eating ones from normal shops or supermarket then? Somebody here definitely grew them this year from the thread 'Help me choose my spuds' so hopefully will come forward with useful info for you. I was put off by this potato which is described as a bit on the floury side.

I quote from the packaging:-

I'll let you know my prognosis once I've tasted them!

I was looking at those on Alan Romans this morning! They're meant to have great slug resistance.

Which supermarket did you find them in?

I grew them last year very nice tasting but agree with the steaming if you are not careful when boiling them you can end up with potato soup.

Hi Snadger
I grew them last year, and was so pleased that I am growing them again. I liked their flavour, and as they are a tad on the floury side, they made good roasts. I always steam my veg instead of boiling, so there was no problem with disintegration. Yields were quite high, and they stored reasonably well until they started sprouting (they were the first of my stored potatoes to start sprouting). I have already planted some of the sprouted ones in pots in the greenhouse as an experiment to see if I can get a super-early crop. Best of luck with them!

I'm ashamed to say 'Tesco's'!

Bloody hell, I'm mighty surprised they're from Tesco (have they gone upmarket? ). I think Tesco typically compares poorly with Sainsbury for potato choices. In case anybody's interested, in Sainsbury they have the usual Maris Piper, King Edward, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Charlotte, Rooster plus the more exclusive Anya & Vivaldi (both have special offers at the moment).

My Tesco didn't have any Mayan Gold but I did get a couple of Roosters to try out

Seahorse, we use roosters all the time. They are very popular in Ireland. I find them a great all round potato.

Got mine too on reduced price from Sainsbury today. I didn't realise it was Mayan Gold until I got home as they also called them Phureja Potatoes, so my confusion. Will save some for growing .
