Mayan Gold Spuds!

I was going to get a few mayan gold from Ryton Potato day but perhaps wont now, we do boil ours and I will forget these don't like it.

I got some Roosters from Wilkinson's last week, they are new for me but came recommended.

Sadly my spud addiction kicked in today whilst on a 'just a look' visit to Wilkinson's again and i bought some trusty Charlotte.

Considering i grow mine in tubs and containers, you'd think I would kerb my spud growing, i have to water and feed em....but nope... Feb 3rd I'm off to Ryton to buy them individually.

Great to hear all the comments people. I have ordered some from T and M and look forward growing / eating them (and not boiling them!).
Gee some of you must have huge potato appetites and or allotments to use so many.

Wondered if anybody's noticed it but Mayan Gold does not chit/sprout well. Mine haven't chitted much (& not likely to either) so just as well they're Maincrop spud.

Bloody hell, I'm mighty surprised they're from Tesco (have they gone upmarket? ). I think Tesco typically compares poorly with Sainsbury for potato choices. In case anybody's interested, in Sainsbury they have the usual Maris Piper, King Edward, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Charlotte, Rooster plus the more exclusive Anya & Vivaldi (both have special offers at the moment).

As well as the above, Sainsbury's also had, in their 'Heritage Potato' box - Arran Victory (from memory), British Queen, and in the organic section, Sarpo Mira, when I last went in. The selection quite surprised me!

It makes me wonder what else I've missed out from their Heritage Potato range. You have to check them out each time you're at Sainsbury as they're not there all the time. So far, I've bought their Phureja/Mayan Gold, British Queen and Edzell Blue but have missed seeing Arran Victory and Sarpo Mira. But I think Anya, Vivald, Charlotte and Desiree are their regular stocks .

what you have to think about if the crop was grown for tesco's they could well have been sprayed with chit suppresent while they were in storage .
I read about mayan gold on here and spoted some in tesco's i bought some put some in a tray to chit and tried some roasted they was ok and tried some mashed after they was steamed and mashed some of the best mashed spuds i have tasted so bought some more and now have enough for 2 rows they do not crop very heavy so they will be well watered with comfrey tea we will se how we go jacob

I've just eaten my Mayan Gold spuds ... highly recommended (I've saved the best for replanting).
They do cook quickly ... we had them steamed (20 mins).
Very little slug damage, and absolutely no scab.

Still to lift my Mayan gold, Mayan queen, and Mayan midnight. They are main crop and formed smaller plants than all my other varieties. Will lift them if it stops raining!

I lifted some Mayan Gold this morning and some Mayan Queen .
I had some Queen for dinner today roasted i would say they just shaded King Edwards for taste very close though .
Gold for din dins tomorow will see how they compare very favourable hopefully .
I did notice that Mayan Queen grows close to the surface and i had one or two green ones whereas the Mayan Gold grows deeper in the ground no green ones .
I plant my spuds 8 inches deep and do not earth up much but will have to remember that Mayan Queen need a bit of cover.

Mayan Gold on menu tonight had them roast with Venison steak and kidney beans very tasty the Gold are just as tasty as the Queen but the shape long thin spuds and the Queen normal spud shape .
They are equal to each other in taste very moorish ....jacob
