No chance of gardening today - horizontal rain. Was meant to be doing a sponsored walk to raise funds for Headway but this was called off due to weather (I still cannot feel my feet). But good news is my homeless chilli and tom seedlings now have new homes to go to Some other participants were more than happy to offer a sunny windowsill or gap in the greenhouse. Need to admit I've sown more tom seeds - more Black Krim and last of the Brown Berry

I have three runner beans Good to see that they are germinating. Pruned some shrubs in the veg. garden.

Weeded a border that I'm clearing, under the back fence. Temperature is 60 F with cloud cover now in the late afternoon. A drop or two of rain fell a few minutes ago.

- sowed Black Croatian and Black Tiger french beans
- planted out parsley for the slugs to eat
- mulched spuds with wet newspaper, topped with earth
- did another 2 hrs weeding.
- despaired at the amount of time & energy this all takes

Today I planted out the brussel sprouts and started planting my new blackthorn hedge olong the side of the allotment, I got about a third of it done.

Hi, new member here. Have always had a few herbs growing in pots, but this year I am trying to grow more serious stuff such as spring onions, runner beans, peas, blackcurrants and strawberries - all in containers (some of which are home-made "self watering" ones - see YouTube - Build a Self Watering Container for a demo). Today I put my tomato seedlings outside to harden off. I've tried growing tomatoes before but not had much success - last year they got blight and the ones that did survive didn't taste of anything. Ah well, better luck this year!

Watered seedlings. Tried to work out what tomatoes are growing by the ones I sowed later that were labelled. Found some Santa ones, and some San Marzano Versuvio ones, the rest, not a clue.
Light weeding, potted on some tomatoes, some peppers.

Pulled out evil gooseberry bush,lots of digging.Another 2 to go-they are on our way to get the fence replaced.Except from gooseberry there's one more bush-I don't know what it is-except that it attracts wasps.I don't want it.
Dug the contents of compost bin into the soil.

TS,your slugs aren't so fussy as mine-last year they never touched parsley-this year I'm lucky again-sown straight into the ground and no interest from them at all-great,more left for me

Watered/Fed my ROMA Bush Tomato plants x 8 because they were marginally 'gasping' in the Conservatory.
I'd be a Liar Liar Pants On Fire if I told you I'd done anything else today, because I'm desperately trying to unpack cardboard boxes today still.
But I did buy some Builders' Buckets today for a Quid each from Homebase, to finally pot my Tomato Plants into. My Mate Terry Marshall (yeah right!!!) recommends at least a pot size of 12-15 inches, or a recycled builders bucket - and I've interpreted his wisdom for the �1 a Bucket Job!! which makes them totally 'moveable' as well.
Trousers was in a GOOD MOOD when he got home, so I got drainage holes drilled in the buckets WELL before he screwed the spare beds back togevver in The Guest Wing?!

Planted up some soaked butter beans. Planted some butter beans direct into bed. Started building perspex sides for carrot bed. rain came on heavy so I sheltered in the chook run. Did a bit then it started to rain again later so I abandoned the carrot bed and headed home.

Planted 4 pumpkin from saved seed & 4 Atlantic Giant. 3 Courgette long green bush, 3 Butternut Hawk. Parmex carrots in plastic trough. Too windy to start any carrots outside, hope it calms down tomorrow. Watered GH plants and legume raised bed as it was getting a bit dry, (finger depth). Moved potato bags into GH as possibility of air frost tonight apparently (2 degrees forecast)

Today i watered it all, looked at the flowers on my toms in their little bubble wrap wind shelter and chopped the flowering heads off my pakchoi in the hope that it will cut and come again, i also stuck some bean seeds in the ground at the feet of those which had been attacked and mauled visciousley buy the slugs to hopefully fill any gaps that appear. wondering if i'm brave enough to plant a chilli outside yet... nah!
went to work and now feeling all moral high ground cause i cycled back at silly oclock tonight rather than car-ing it

What I did yesterday - planted out all the beans - runners and climbing frenchies - they grew like mad things in the conservatory and have had them hardening off for the last 7 or 8 days and they still grew like mad things, so they're out! I'm just praying now that we don't have any late frosts. My new greenhouse (bought with Xmas and birthday money) is now erect and complete so I played in there last night - potting on cauliflower, romanesco and gherkins and transferring seedlings from the conservatory to the greenhouse. OH says plaintively -so can we use the room again? Yes, we can! But I've got to clean up first!

Sowed first of the Romanescu Caulis. Salvaged 2 plastic greenhouses and put chillis and a couple of poorly cukes (they didn't enjoy being blown out of a my proper greenhouse) Planted more carrots and spring onions. Earthed up Foremost and Vivaldi tatties (Charlottes are somewhat lagging behind). Oca is now romping away (must have liked all of the rain) Sowed some Cherokee Trail of Tears and lots of Minidor beans (yum). Repotted Iranian Red and Lemon Drop chillies.

Put a spiral of green garden wire round pea canes as the high winds keep leaving the plants trailng on the floor, hopefully this will help them get a good hold. Watered GH. Dug out a fourth 6'x3' bed to house sweetcorn and pumpkins/squash in June. Dug to one spade depth and added plenty of chicken manure pellets. Don't do double digging, I wouldn't do single digging if I could avoid it, but my garden is really a mass of wild grasses ov varying heights so the roots form a dense mat about 3" deep. Next year I will just add more compost/manure to the raised bed, avoiding all but gentle digging. May well need another bed to put out leeks and celery.
