Our cat uses our bedroom Velux window as her catflap!

Yesterday she turned up with a live pipistrelle bat which appreciated being released to fly another night

Our concerns re unwanted nocturnal visitors is flies and moths and the odd mosquito being attracted to our reading lamps- even if the blinds are closed.
Hardly any chance of 'tea-leaves' chez nous!

A few words for those worried about leaving the windows open, tilt and turn windows. They lock in an open position. My bedroom window isn't shut even when its in minus figures outside, I sleep much better when I have fresh air.

There's a sketch I can't remember who did it, that has a father going to see his little daughter who's frightened of boogie men in the closet. He calmly responds you don't want to be scared of boogie men in the closet, tucking her back in to bed, its the burglars coming in the window you want to worry about!!!

I used to be a Homewatch Co-ordinator when we lived in the UK.
The police warned us about nocturnal visitors entering the house via open bedroom windows
Make sure you (and your neighbours) hide away -securely- long ladders which can make access so much more easy folks!

3pm ( ie school pick up time) was another peak time during summer months for tea leaves to become active..so get those windows shut when you nip out!

So I shouldn't leave the back door open then when I pick up the littleun Nicos?

As a kid I grew up in a house where the backdoor wasn't just unlocked it was often wide open. My father was a fireman, and when he disappeared in the middle of the night if my mother didn't hear him go the back door was frequently wide open....

We have upvc double glazing and when we have ours open at night, I can lock them in a slightly open position, which feels much safer than just open.

Why are modern homes so poor at keeping the heat out. I lived in a stone cottage for a while and that was always lovely and cool year round. I'm often working in modern houses which are supposed to be super well insulated but they can't be all that good as they are rubbish at keeping the heat out.

This is the one time of the year I'm glad I live in an old (rented) cottage. Thick walls, small windows, and it's cool

I've been gardening until about 11am and then doing a bit in the evening and only watering during the day. Seedlings in the ground and pots have to be done twice a day, morning and afternoon, but then we did hit 39 last week. Silly.
Still, got snow in the mountains so I think we might go and lie in some!!

So true, we live in a town house, and as you go up each floor gets hotter and hotter, and by the time you get to the top it's like a greenhouse !
