I grew up on a farm and we always had to watch out for what we called Grey crows around lambing time. I never liked crows, they're ugly, noisy and steal the little birds food. I'm an ecology student though so I understand how the whole thing works and that most animals serve a purpose, even the ones I don't like.

Binners, Debris netting may work very well on your lottie/garden but on a 40 acre field I some how don't think so.

Many years ago even the gardener was catered for with the 9mm garden gun, a very short range but effective shotgun.

I just think in the so called 21st century there must be a better detterent.

Dead or not every thing deserves respect.

This comes from someone who went to the seaside last week and felt sorry that someone was digging up old & gnarled rose bushes and just lobbing them in the skip..... well I brought them home and planted them, they may or may not surrvive but at least I tried; They had given years of beautiful flowers and I think they deserve better.

I've just read this back and sound like a tree hugging nutter................ nutter, well i don't think so. Hugs trees, oh always

Magpies are evil, they will happily raid other birds nests and eat the hatchlings

It certainly used to be commonplace up here as well, Crows are intelligent birds and will avoid any area where there are dead birds visible

            Agreed on both counts

We need to be careful that we don't start referring to all large black birds as crows.
Carrion crows and magpies will attack smaller birds. The guys with pigeons at our allotments were blaming sparrow hawks for killing their pigeons bit it turned out to be the crows that were the perps.

I worked in an open cast mine for a few years driving heavy machinery. Every year a hawk or kestrel hung about, they're lovely to watch. Anyway, one of the old timers told me that years ago some massive crows came around every year and they actually killed the hawks. He didn't know exactly what they were but they were black so he called them crows.

Down at lottie, I regularly see crows taking on Red Kites but quite often come a cropper. Both crows & magpies are a pain IMO with pidgeons not far behind.

Magpies will eat small bird eggs, which normally i would say is no problem but due the fact that most farmers have ripped out every hedge that they can get there claws into there is no natural habitat for the little bird so there are not as many, but unfortanlty as magpies, crows, jays are all quite opitunistic birds they still do well.

That's interesting Darwin, I've often wondered what purpose a wasp serves, I have tried to think of something but just keep drawing a blank. I guess they must keep some pest at bay but given the choice I would choose said pest..........
