As someone else has said, new comers to the vine may not know about the excellent search facilty, I didn't and certainly asked questions that had been asked a million times before. Some things will come up every year, but if you look back through your collection of magazines, they print similar articles, if not every year, then fairly regularly, we are involved in a seasonal hobby/pastime/lifestyle, so the same things will crop up year after year after year after... you get the idea.
Personally I find it acts a reminder for those things I have forgoten to do, and ignore those that I don't find helpul and or intersting.

I've never done a 'search'..........if I wanted to research something I would read a book.
The vine is something different to me, I like to hear viners different takes on the same problem............... you are never too old to learn.

If I had just joined the forum and asked a question to be lectured and told to use the search facility, I would think "Sod them" and would quickly move on and get involved with another more respectful gardening forum!

That's why I tend to do a search on behalf of the newbie & post a link for them......but I am not saying that is the correct action to take, it's just my way because I am often not experienced enough to give an opinion.

And that is very kind of you

I have sometimes gone to my books to find an answer that I already know, but want to ensure I am correct before passing it on - only to find my business line rings and I get drawn back into work-mode and forget to come back, or someelse has answered by the time I do.

Not everyone here is comfortable with computers, the Search function just may be a step too far for their confidence until they get more used to the site

              That's a bit strong.
What is disrespectful about pointing out the various facilities that exist?
It's helping people to find information, it's not saying 'go forth and read a book'

People have already done a search when they get to us: by typing their query into Google; the Grapevine then pops up with one of our threads.

I think we're never gonna get it right....but people do end up with a range of typed advice and 'here's one I made earlier'....esp if they come back and comment on the first few posts to clarify more specifically what they are asking.....sometimes you CAN'T answer until we have more info so posted a previous discussion might help them to formulate a further question.

I think also it depends on how it is originally asked; new questions asked rudely are always going to be subject to either sharp responses or none at all.

Anyway - the original question was about the stickies which have been thinned out and we will bear it in mind to try and limit them to current issues; I think a range of responses giving advice and links to searches will cover most bases and will hopefully assist both those who like to do research and those that don't.....that's all we can do really.

Indeed that is probably true, but I have seen some replies from people who stated they didn't realise about the search or got lost in it.

Anyway, we're all nice here and try to help wherever possible, that's all anyone can do.
