Freecycle Is Brilliant..!!

Evening All

I joined this site a little while ago...thought I would give it a try, and with my bad luck with the Greenhouse, as some of you might already know, I put up posts for plants, etc...to cut along story short, I have spent most of today collecting stuff...I collected 24 Strawberry Plants...10 assorted established Tomato Plants...some Chilli plants and 9 Demi-Johns...thought I would give the wine making a go again...lol...didnt cost me a penny...all freecycling to stop stuff going into landfill...there seems to be one in most areas...please goole in your area and give it a go...its been a blessing to me and everyone I collected from were nice and genuine people...off to bed now people...driven miles today.

I love freecycle but get annoyed when you offer somthing and the same people request it no matter what it is...you just know they are bootfairing it. Ok it stayes out of landfill but prevents someone who actually need it getting it.

I had 24 pine (above the house) and a willow (too big for this garden) cut down in the last 2 years. I have successfully recycled all the wood to people with wood-burning stoves right through to people who wanted a few branches for a wildlife area. Met loads of nice people, I love freecycle!

Nog, same here...but what really annoys me are the people who say 'I'll take it'
On the other hand, if you don't judge people for what they offer or ask for and are just in it to recycle, you don't really get annoyed so much.
As long as you're happy with getting/giving, it doesn't matter, because people who take the mickey get the same response as you gave them...

i agree, freecycle is brilliant......in an hours time i'm going to collect a shed i managed to win from freecycle.....how cool is that!!. my lottie will finally have a shed!.

Freecycle was set-up to reuse products because of things going in landfill and worries about climate change.
It is much better than buying new, but people seem to forget that they should gives things to local people, so that they dont "drive miles".

FG, I'm no climate change expert, in fact I'm no expert in anything, but surely the fuel burnt to collect the variety of different items collected by Braders will be offset by none of the same going into landfill?
I think Freecycle is a fantastic concept, clearly there are people who abuse it, but the majority of people use it for what its designed for. I just wish the French werent so tight, and it worked over here. It exists but is very poorly subscribed to.

Yes, Freecycle is brilliant, but my experiences of it vary so much. Yesterday I went down to my local village to collect a hanging basket that was offered (there were 9 on offer, but I only wanted one, which he was happy about) - when I got there they were only fit for landfill tbh, all squashed and broken - luckily I was in his road anyway, so hadn't made a special trip. However, on a brighter note, I've had some great rasp plants and a music stand for DD, both from lovely people. And the first thing I gave away (loo & washbasin!), the lady who collected brought me a dozen organic eggs from her hens .

I always try to give my stuff to the most local people, to keep mileage down, and don't go for stuff if it's a long trek - although if it was something I really wanted I might! What grieves me is when folk chuck out perfectly good stuff, which happens all the time - my neighbours once got rid of their garden furniture to the skip, and it was in perfect condition - but, clock this, they had cut it all in half first, so I couldn't salvage it

I think it's brilliant! I've travelled a few mile to pick things up too. (well it was a greenhouse!)

I think like all things, people will decide whether it is worth making the trip using their own decision making process. After all, people will travel to nurseries/garden centres etc to pick up veg to grow - to why would it make any difference to collect off freecycle?

Besides, if 'local' people cannot see the benefit, it should still be offered to the wider circle....and I'm sure everyone is on their local freecycle anyway so they would be local in the first place.

To set things straight..I made 5 trips yesterday, to various local villages, which totalled quite a few miles in all. One I could of walked I suppose, but I had limited time etc...this would of taken me a good hour. I think I did my bit yesterday and will continue to do so by giving and taking. There is nothing like having your spirits dampened is there..!..oh well, right now I am off into Chester to Wilkos to buy some more gardening goodies and guess what..?.. Iam going to WALK..sorry couldnt resist.

I love Frecycle too, not just 'cos I acquired my greenhouse and all the staging (all very local) but to get rid of my unwanted clutter that I can't bear to throw in the bin.

The missus and I cleared out our loft of all the baby things to loads of different people back in February. It was great to see thing go to a new home and not the dump!

Well done on your freecycling Braders - I'm really pleased for you! I think it's brilliant and have both given and received from it. As a new gardener when it came to thinning out I couldn't bear to throw any seedlings away so hence had loads spare which I freecycled to several happy people. I put a wanted on for some strawberry plants and one of said people got in touch and gave me strawberry plants and marjoram. Also got several Bergenia plants from one freecycler that no one else wanted. Long live freecycle!!!
