We drove through a country village today and there must have been 4 roadside stalls selling veggies, eggs plants and flowers. I brought 3 tomatoe plants. Has anyone else participated in roadside buys? It was quite good fun.

We put the last of the Plants from our plant sale in the drive with an honesty box for the past two weeks and have tken �60.....don't know if its going to charity that makes a diferance.My phone has more Processing power than the Computers NASA used to fake the Moon Landings -
When we lived in Yorkshire there were quite a few road side stalls - flowers, fruit, veg etc. mind you that was back in the 1980s. No stalls really to speak of here in Lancashire these days, or is that just a sign of the times?Bernie aka DDL

I think it could well be. People arent as honest as they used to be either. I would be a little cautious if i was me leaving my veggies by the roadside. But i think its quite sad and people should still do this or it will be another one of those really nice things that just gets abandoned by the changing of the times.
It also shows a good sense of community i think too when you see lots of places doing it in one village.

Sounds like a nice part of Surrey NOG. If we put stuff out here on an honesty system basis the local scroats would just nick it.Comment

I've had an honest box at entrance to my lottie for a year now and I've never had eggs or money stolen and eggs are always payed for!

Just dug out a piccie of my 'box'! Usually pick up �1.60 a day from it! Helps to pay for the chooks food!
PS I had to put the hinged perspex lid on the front to deter the thieving magpies which were pecking at the eggs!

When we went on holiday last year we loved driving through the villiages and seeing the honesty boxes everywhere, selling allsorts of wonderful fresh items from flowers to homemade chutneys, going back in 4 weeks and 6 days (not that im counting down or anything) and will be stocking up...I LOVE CORNWALL YAY!Life isnt about surviving the storm.....But learning to dance in the rain.Comment

I've found that refering to peoples intergrity on some sort of signage tweaks their concience.
For instance my sign gave the price of the veggie plants (bargains - all!) and thanked them for their honesty. - Hard to resist, and not one theft!

I have a table of plants in my front garden and have sold a few, not one plant taken and people tend to ring the door bell, not sure about leaving an honesty box as we get loads of kids passing on there way to school. If the plants go astray I'm not too bothered but if the money went missing I would be annoyed cos I would rather give the plants away than someone pay and their money went missing.Gardening ..... begins with daybreak
and ends with backache

Wow, think i will have to try and get down to cornwall! Im quite lucky there is a village not far from us (Lowdham) On august bank holiday they have a horticultural show! I love going and some of the veg is a monsterous size!! all good fun though and sometimes the WI make cakes to buy too

In the mountain areas of Sabah in Malaysia they do this all the time. Of course there, the locals worry about curses farmers will put on them if they're not honest!Comment

On a lane near where my pony is, a cake table resides next to the road for the whole of summer. Has an 'honesty' pot, for the money. I've made it famous, as I told my OH, he told his workmates...and so on. Apparently some of them go out of their way to stop for 'afters' at lunchtime, lol! I've bought jam from the roadside, before, when out on my pony! I was paranoid for the whole return ride, though. It's very common round here.
The cake table did get raided last summer. They took the whole lot. Table cloths, plates, money, cakes...I felt so angry for them. Thankfully it hasn't put them off and I still get a huge flapjack for 50p. Hmmmm, think I'll drive home a different route, tonight...Comment
