  • Annual mercury anomoly.

    Morning folks,
I have done some hoe'ing recently and cleared a few annual mercury weeds. I left them laying where they fell. 2 days ago i noticed that all of them had turned a blue colour. This weed is persistent on my patch and i have never seen then turn blue. See below images and should I be concerned????

Never heard of it…but having a ‘little gooogle around’ was very interesting!

Are you aware they are highly toxic ?

I wasn't aware Nicos. They are one of my better "crops" :-) always growing no matter what time of year. Just wondering if this was normal or are other folk seeing it. I should have taken the photo's a day or 2 earlier too.

          Did a goggle myself and.......

"Yes, the sap and bruised or cut stems of Annual Mercury (Mercurialis annua) can briefly turn a distinct deep blue color when exposed to air.
This fleeting color change is caused by hermidi This fleeting color change is caused by hermidin, a chemical compound naturally found in the plant. When you cut the stem or young shoots, the clear sap exudes and oxidizes, temporarily forming CyanoHermidin (which is deep blue) before quickly turning green and eventually fading to a yellow-brown. "
Never seen it before and was wondering if i had some sort of disease in my garden :-)
