  • I can't sleep either tonight. Had a nap during the day and it's completely messed me up. Last listened regularly to the Archers when Walter Gabriel, Ned Larkin and Polly Perkins were still about.

We haven't had an Idiot's lantern for about 35 years. Don't miss it, but we still have the wireless.

    • Morning

We have snow not a lots but enough to leave foot prints.

Oddly I remember the shipping forecast used to be on our radio in the morning. Nothing else sticks in my mind until I was older with my own radio and listened to Radio Luxembourg under the covers, no headphones back then.

It's time for me Christmas back in its box today, i know others keep theirs out longer.

      enjoy your day

          • Good morning.

It's 1°C and sunny here. Having just had a look at the forecast, next week seems to have altered somewhat. The latest version is showing snow on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Maybe I should increase Tuesday's supermarket delivery. Seige mentality kicking in??

I do remember once, in my twenties, struggling to get home in a snowstorm at about 5am. Thanks to snowploughs having done their job, I got to within about a mile, the nearest village. It was then a choice of either trying to sleep in my car or leaving the car and battling my way on foot a mile up a steep hill through about 18 inches of pristine snow. I left the car, an old Ford capri (useless in snow), behind the post office and walked. I have no recollection of if I was wearing clothes that were remotely suitable. I don't think I would/could make the same choice nowadays. Ah, the perceived invincibility of youth! If I'd fallen and injured myself I doubt that I'd have been found for a few days. No mobile phones back then.

I had a good start to the New Year, a free lucky dip on the lottery

Keep warm everyone, Spring is around the corner (bloody big corner!)

            • Quite heavy snow just arrived, not forecast to last for long, but more overnight it seems, 2 degrees and quite windy.

              • As I am getting so prepared, (famous last words), we probably will get minimal disruption from next week's much hyped weather.

However, it is one of my nieces birthdays next Saturday. I was going to send her parcel, (tracked 48), on Tuesday or Wednesday. It is quite a large unwieldy item. Garden items and an oversized fleece hoodie. I have now sealed it with duct tape, bought and printed postage and organised for it to be collected in the morning. Better a few days early than stuck in snow somewhere. I will email her to tell her that there is nothing inside that will spoil or come to harm before her birthday.

As long as we are warm and have food I am more than happy to watch snow through a window these days. I'm turning into my grandma.....

                • Afternoon n’alln’all

Late start for me. Slept for 11 hours with one wee stop
I seem to have spent hours on the phone this morning..so many people wanting to have long chats! …Lovely catching up tbh.

Our decorations are staying up a tad longer…most likely until the 6th. As far as I’m concerned it’s over far too quickly, and I sort of want to hang into this one as long as I can.

We had a dry, sunny and very cold forecast for the next week and more, but it changed here suddenly too. Very heavy rain just as we were going to bed…followed by -6°C night led to nasty black ice. So glad we don’t need any shopping or have any appointments until next week. The gravel driveway has come into its own. It might be a pain to weed but at least we can access our woodpile , cellars and post box without risking a tumble.

We were living in Cardiff in the early 80s when we had several feet of snow- might that be the winter you are thinking of GF?
The letter box disappeared and The parked cars were mounds of snow and we all had to walk down the centre of the roads. I had to walk to the main hospital to cover for those staff in intensive care and the wards who couldn’t make it in from the valleys. It was one heck of an eye opener how much team work was needed to run a hospital .
I guess Flo was working back then and maybe has some hospital memories?
All staff who turned up were given free milk and bread to take home…I couldn’t see that happening these days!
Our cat had to stay indoors much to his annoyance but when he was eventually let out he brought back a frozen rigid seagul he’d found! Talk about one proud little boy…it was huuuuge compared with him!

We’ve just had a few snowflakes but from the look of the sky it looks like more rain is due.
Keep safe everyone affected by ice and snow…no broken limbs please…you need to be fit for this coming gardening year

Enjoy your day peeps as best you can xx

                    • I went back to work full time in 1989 Nicos. Over the years I have often walked the 3 miles to the hospital in snow and ice. Couldn't do it now!

No snow here and none that I can see forecast…on saying that we will probably end up with a blizzard.
Enjoy the rest of your day. x

                          • Afternoon all.

Best wishes for 2026 to you too, Jay.

Apologies for late arrival. Morning of errands in the village. Supposedly an afternoon of paid work, but none done so far.

Chilly here today as well. The snow forecast for Sunday and Monday is creeping back up, while the forecast high for temperatures is dropping. Looks like we're due to have the same weather on Monday as the Scottish Highlands and mountainous areas. Mind you, I'm not complaining. A cold winter keeps the pests down in summer.

Have a great rest of the day, everyone.

                            • Agree with you about the cold and the pests Snoop.
However….We’ve brought in several queen wasps with our wood for the fire. Slow enough to catch and escort outside….With less bees around, they need all the help to survive as they can get. Just hope they find somewhere in the barn or garage to overwinter….

                              • Middle of the night again.

All the weather forecasts now seemingly agree that we are going to get snow on Tuesday. That is the day I'd got my grory hop delivery booked for. I'm not totally convinced that they are right but I've now changed my delivery to Sunday afternoon. I know from chatting to the drivers that we are on the same route as Emley Moor and it might get a bit rough up there. Why tempt fate (and stranded, cancelled or delayed vans)? If we're going to get awful weather at least we'll have a full fridge. Heaven forbid we should run short of milk or chocolate.
