Salsify

Has anyone here tried Salsify? (growing and eating). We grew a single row, just to try, and even though it's one of the WEIRDEST looking plants I've seen, it tastes wonderful, raw and cooked.

Any other comments?

• Easy to grow
• Delicious taste
• Loads of ways to prepare and eat
• Hardy, can be harvested from the ground all winter
• Lovely blue flowers for insects
• Low in calories
• Can be blanched now, like chicory

yes, I grow it and wouldn't be without it!

Supposed to taste of 'Oysters' but the oysters I eat never touch the sides so I have no idea of what they taste like!

Still going to grow some this year though!

No problem, just plan for a bubble bath the evening you eat it!

Thanks Snadger - wouldn't eat oysters if I was paid a million quid!!! I used to work for the Ministry of Ag Fish and Food in the Fisheries department!!! Say no more!

Did anyone try the Scorzonera seeds free with gyo a couple of years ago? These are Black Salsify and were very easy to grow and tasted wonderful.

We grew salsify about 10 yrs ago in heavy clay, with poor results.
I think this year I want to try it in peat and see the difference.

Not a favourite I am afraid, that hint of "oyster" when eating a roast consigned the lot to the compost bin, although you may want to try the following recipe:-

Put plenty of salsify into a large saucepan of water and use a clean housebrick to keep the salsify submerged. Season with salt, pepper and a bit of ground cumin. Boil vigourously for 3 hours and then strain. Throw the salsify in the bin and eat the brick.
