Has anyone here tried Salsify? (growing and eating). We grew a single row, just to try, and even though it's one of the WEIRDEST looking plants I've seen, it tastes wonderful, raw and cooked.
Any other comments?

What does it taste like? Or is it one of those things which has a taste all its own?
Supposed to taste of 'Oysters' but the oysters I eat never touch the sides so I have no idea of what they taste like!
Still going to grow some this year though!

Hardy, can be harvested from the ground all winter
Lovely blue flowers for insects
Low in calories
Can be blanched now, like chicory
yes, I grow it and wouldn't be without it!
Only one small downside?
No problem, just plan for a bubble bath the evening you eat it!

Thanks Snadger - wouldn't eat oysters if I was paid a million quid!!! I used to work for the Ministry of Ag Fish and Food in the Fisheries department!!! Say no more!
Not a favourite I am afraid, that hint of "oyster" when eating a roast consigned the lot to the compost bin, although you may want to try the following recipe:-
Put plenty of salsify into a large saucepan of water and use a clean housebrick to keep the salsify submerged. Season with salt, pepper and a bit of ground cumin. Boil vigourously for 3 hours and then strain. Throw the salsify in the bin and eat the brick.
