  • A sort of variation on a theme of cauli cheese with various veggies tumbled in , a leek sauce and topped with cheese.

I was actually fancying a risotto!

      • Yesterday's sausage and saffron risotto was okay but I wasn't really impressed with the sausages, a bit bland and tasteless.

Today I think smoked basa fillets poached in milk with either parsley sauce or a poached egg on top, new potatoes, french beans and corn on the cob.

        • I spotted some smoked hake in the freezer which needs using up so I think we’ll be having kedgeree tonight. That will use up some eggs too
Not had kedgeree for ages, so I’m really fancying that!

          • The smoked basa fillets, which I'd never tried before, were lovely. I cooked them in milk with a nob of butter in the oven. Far nicer than the really salty smoked haddock that I bought a few weeks ago.

            Tonight, moussaka with salad.

            Hopefully strawberries and cream.

            • No idea as yet, but it had better involve asparagus. I looked a couple of days back and nothing happening. Looked last night and there were quite a few spears, including a couple that were past their best already. This is the crowns' third year. Fingers crossed for a bumper crop after all the rain.

Tonight we are having roast chicken with cauli and french beans
Possibly followed by ‘trifle’ or profiteroles.

                  • Lasagne and salad, lasagne hastily defrosted in the microwave. I've also bought some Soleros so have stepped away from the magnum and the coconut and raspberry tart we had last night with custard and that was after fish fingers and chips!

                    • We've used up the weekend's cottage pie, so tonight was a venison casserole. Chianti with redcurrant jelly in it amongst other stuff and got the venison just about right in the chewiness/fall-apartiness department.

                        • Last night's "taste the difference" moussaka was a ready meal for two that I'd bought in my online shop to try while it was on special offer. It was absolutely wonderful. So much so that I've put a couple more on next week's shopping list, one to eat and one for the freezer, while they're still on offer.

I am struggling to decide what to have tonight. Maybe salmon?

                            • A simple tumble salad this evening…guest ingredients tinned pilchards and our eggs.

The profiteroles won last night…yummy even in their frozen state!
So we’ll finish off the ‘trifle’ tonight

                              • Asparagus grows quicker than I realised. From only having one spear past its best earlier, by the time I picked it yesterday there were four. So with those and the woodier but not too fibrous bits from yesterday's grilled spears, there's enough for asparagus soup. This is a life I could grow accustomed to!

Plus there might be enough left in the calorie bank after soup for a proper pud. Mince pies and cream might fit the bill.
