  • Reasoned Debate!

This might open another can of worms but is not intended to cause offence.....

Are there any gender specific jobs roles?
Are there any jobs that only women or men should/could do?

    Lets get you started!

I have recently been told that men who want to be nurses must be gay. I dont believe that this is true.
Also if a man wanted to be a nursery nurse that he must have sinister motives.
How would you feel if your preschooler was looked after by a man?

My daughter is studying Civil Engineering at the moment. There are 5 girls in her year group out of about 90. When they have site lessons, my daughter wears her hard hat and site boots, along with a pretty frock, or skirt/top. She doesnt see why she cannot remain feminine whilst doing a job that is (at the moment) dominated by/deemed to be a male only role. The other girls seem to prefer the traditional jeans & t-shirt or jumper. A lot of girls are now starting to make inroads into the traditional male dominated jobs, and there is no reason why they should not succeed.

Not sure how good a bloke would be as a page three model?

Other than that, no. If someone is fit for a job and it's their chosen career, gender shouldn't come into it.

I do not believe there are any gender specific jobs. I do believe certain jobs are more physically demanding but that does not limit these jobs to one gender - there are strong/weak women and strong/weak men.

Are all male nurses gay, eh, no. The reverse of this is all female nurses are straight!

As I don't have children I don't know how I would feel about a man looking after children. All I can relate it to is don't dads look after their children.

I like the fact that my daughter had some very good male role models both at nursery and school. And conversley have observed a very brave lady working in a steel works.

Anything is possible if that's what you want to do, I have no issues with it.

Well if she wants to walk up a ladder, on a building site, in the summer on a breezy day, or in the pouring rain, with her hard hat on that co-ordinates with her pretty frock...that's her choice isn't it.

You boys are in enough trouble...although it does remind me of when I worked for Intercity, I went down to Bristol Temple Meads wearing a skirt suit and heels. Had to walk up the mesh bridge next to the engine being brake tested. The bridge straddled one side of the mechanics pit...you get the picture. I couldn't have given a monkeys over the whistles, etc. I politely curtsied and left the bridge with a retort of "pleased I've breathed life into some old boys "

From my experience...of looking after children that is.,.OH is a male role model that encourages his children to be whatever they want to be whether male or female.

Would you want your childs nappy changed by a man at nursery school?
Would you be happy to let a man take you to toilet or help you with a bedpan/bedbath in hospital?

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
