  • crazy lazy things to buy in shops...

I like to spot mad things when I am shopping. It always amuses me to see ready washed and chopped veg for example, or grated cheese.

But today in Waitrose took the cake... bagged breadcrumbs!

    How lazy is that?!

What have you seen in shops that makes you chuckle as it''s sooooo lazy?

Frozen chopped onions. The one that really drives me mad actually is frozen yorkshire puds.

I confess to buying chopped frozen garlic. I can't use the garlic press any more so it makes sense to me. It is also way cheaper than buying bulbs (though I roast whole bulbs of garlic with Sunday dinner).

Note to self, go see if there is any garlic in the garden ready to harvest

I confess I buy grated cheese I use it a lot in cooking and I just cannot be hacked.

Also I have Panko which is asian breadcrumbs in a bag BUT it is better than home made and I only use it for asian style cooking, for burgers et all I will rub breadcrumbs

Shirl, have you tried 'lazy garlic' in a jar? It's basically minced garlic preserved in vinagar and when you cook it the vinagar cooks off. My OH swore by using this until he met me and we grew some instead.

Frozen icecubes make me shake my head too!

For breadcrumbs I use the tiny electri mixer I had to puree baby food. It's brill for choping breadcrumbs, nuts, onions etc and saves getting the big mixer out for small quantities

                Got to Feel Sorry.....

......for the people who buy this ready prepped stuff. Are their lives so busy that they haven't got time to do it? I'd hate to live like that, so they have my sympathy.

On the other hand, our elderly neighbours find it a godsend, despite the high prices. Ice cubes ready made are great for parties. I've only got three or four icecube trays. I buy grated mozarella to top our homemade pizza.

It's not all the ready prepped stuff that makes me wonder. It's all the excess packaging that stuff comes in.

I have to say, ready made stock in jars (although probably very handy) looks disgusting.

you just need to be organised. Spend a couple of days making ice-cubes and bag them up ready for your party.

Little trays of creamed potatoes - amazes me.

I keep a box of grated cheese and a box of breadcrumbs in the freezer then they're just ready to use when required.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I have tried it but it is almost as much trouble to get a jar lid off as it is to use a garlic press The frozen stuff is 57p for 190g which is way better than buying the bulbs round here. Obviously, I also grow my own for roasting (though I haven't actually managed to harvest any yet)

I have bought ice cubes, in the States when we had a tiny freezer and I needed something to keep the cool box cool to get ice cream home. Ice cubes were cheap there and there was no space to do freezer blocks in the little bit of space we had. Used to put the lot in the cool box then put the cubes in a jug in the fridge to use for making drinks.

YES YES Jacob the most stupid idea yet still if they melt you can always boil the water & make a cup of tea.

PS We don't even buy ready made sauces.

Here's one I picked the other day. 2 cloves missing - went into the curry. Yum.
