  • Vine weevils killing mint

In our herb garden we have a few species of mint. As its fairly bombproof I was suprised to see two varieties keel over and die.

After lifting the bottomless pots they were planted in, vine weevils were quickly identified as the culprits. I have never lost mint before and the weevils must have overwintered in the pots.

I didnt know they liked mint!

My main problem with mint is keeping it contained, in fact I plant in large pots now. Bad luck with the weevils David. I didn't know they liked mint either, they make a beeline (or weevil-line) for my fuchsias.

I've just discovered a load in my potted Wisteria, I had it underplanted with primroses. My way to test for Vine Weevil larvae is to gently pull on the plants.....if they come up in your hands you've been Weeviled!!!!

I think that I heard somewhere that Vine weevils are more inclined to take up residence in peat based composts than the old John Innes type

The only problem I've had with vine weevils was in my strawberry tub a few years ago, lost a whole load of plants which were just coming into their second year. Treated the compost, emptyied it all out and took it to the tip before giving the tub a good wash. Seem to be avoiding them again now but but am currently grabbing wood.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
