Wow Nicos - you just answered one of my questions about how 'different' is this year to others!! I always thought that we were pampered and didn't know when we had it good!
What would be nice is to get some good ideas for dealing with it all - 'specially if we get big time power cuts!! (thoughts - can't bring the chiminea indoors!!)Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

My dad had already told me about this. Football was cancelled for nearly three months and I was born in the north east, right in the middle of it. That makes me 47 next week unfortunately. As far as I can remember, this is the longest sustained snowy period in my lifetime in the UK, but not the coldest. I lived it northern Germany for 9 years, trust me, this is nothing, we just haven't invested in preparing for it, because it is so unlikely.Originally posted by Nicos View Post
1962-63: A famous winter.Very cold. Mid November saw snow in the South West. Late December (commensing Boxing Day: the start of the bitter cold) saw blizzards in Southern England. London had 12 inches of drifting snow. January and February had widespread falls, especially Devon and North East England with 2ft. Very Snowy. My mum, 12 at the time, and dad, 11, keep telling me stories of how long they were away from school for. The snow in Hampshire was supposedly as deep as the hedgerows were high! People managed to walk on the tops of the frozen shrubbery, rather than risk driving through the deep snow! An amazing winter.Last edited by Ringo Grumio Nibbler; 06-01-2010, 10:10 PM.
