    • Yesterday started snowing here at about 12.30 and stopped at about 9.00 pm. We have 3-4 inches (can't do metric). It is foggy and murky this morning, but warmer. IF .... the sun can break through this will thaw. Otherwise ....

          • North Notts/South Yorks - Thurs Feb 9th 2012

Last week's snow is still lying virtually untouched on garden, grass, soil areas (temps have remained low daytime and freezing at night) but has largely melted on concrete areas, pavements, bricks (perhaps of interest to those trying to keep cold greenhouses frost free as concrete/brick can act as a "heat sink", releasing it at night - all very marginal but it does make a slight difference).

Forecast is for more snow this afternoon and very cold couple of nights in the -4C range, getting just above freezing at the weekend. Not doing too much harm yet and hopefully reducing summer "pests", slowing the sowing process as fast running out of frost-free spaces (with module onions, shallots, garlic, broadbeans, sweet peas, + tomatoes and aubergines all hanging about) but not really a problem, more time to drink coffee and read GYO....

4.11 p.m. started to snow. Very light at present, sky uniform grey, temperature 0C, pressure high. More coffee required....

              • -8C last night in Staffs Moorlands.

                Snow still lying.
Pavements in places like a skating rink - rain then frost.

Dog walker broke her arm on them yesterday about 300metres away.

I looked out this am and gave up morning run as our yard was like a sheet of glass.

Not as cold as last year but conditions underfoot much more treacherous.

Main roads ok... well grritted and salted.

Turkey reduced to eating snow as water freezes in 5 minutes outside..

                • Hard frost last night, but some blue sky and high cloud this morning. First time I have seen the sun for nearly a week! It has been really grey and overcast since last weekend. Still have snow on the lawns from last weekend and my snow goblin (couldn't be bothered to make a snowman) is still there, albeit a little warped and mis-shapen.

                  • Sun has been out all day but still patches of snow on the garden from last weekend.

                    • It actually did not freeze last night - did not have to scrape the car this morning. Wow - feels positively balmy. Snow is still lurking on the lawns though.

Yes, I agree, and have you noticed that stuff in cold greenhouse, unheated conservatory etc that has sat sulking for over a week during that very cold snap day and night is suddenly putting on a spurt....? Broad beans in particular (in root-trainers) are suddenly positively romping. A little caution might still be wise but if they want to go out to play with the tough boys (like the Christmas tree!) I'd be pleased to have the space. Weather forecast for next few days appears to be low temps but not freezing so inclined to let them take their chance...

                              • At last some real rain. It's been going for a good hour now, not heavy but steady.

Went to lottie to wrap up my blossoms though as plummeting temperatures and snow on the forecast. Picked some parsley too.
