I voted for the robin too. It's probably the most reliable bird in the garden, come rain, sun or snow, there's always one about somewhere. And there's the tradition aspect of it, and personally I value anything like that especially in this day and age.

My second choice would've been the kingfisher. I've only ever seen one once. But they make me think of the quintessentially English tale Wind In The Willows (life on the riverbank).

The nuthatch with it's distinctive highwayman's mask would've been another good choice. Shame it's not included in the line up.

Holds head down - shuffles feet - tries to blend in with sofa - takes a deep breath and.....

I saw them announce it last night and the guy organising it most clearly preferred the blackbird and I thought he seemed peeved that the aggressive little robin had won!

( yup- I voted for the robin )

I still say it should have been the feral pigeon - or even, for a seafaring nation, the seagull.

Personally, although i love the robin ( in general you understand not one in particular ) i would have much preffered a succsess story such as the Avocet or Osprey but my favourite was the Red Kite, i just love watching those birds.
