poor toad, indeed - but i guess it must be one from last year so must be doing reasonably ok. I've read about this somewhere and have a feeling it isn't that unusual in amphibians.

I'm sure I read somewhere about a disease/virus that was affecting toads/frogs development ..hopefully he can still get about and find enough slugs to eat.

Yes poor little thing. It could have been clipped by a mower, or perhaps got caught up in pond netting...

Oh that's interesting. Poor toad, but at least it's a natural cause and not chemicals.

We used to have a frog in our garden with a missing leg, but that was definitely caused by a lawn mower. The frog survived and seemed to manage surprisingly well.

BUT,this one was not missing any limbs,a front limb had developed onto two, joined together, with two feet, all other limbs were as normal,

That must be my eyesight! I thought that was caused by a healed over laceration.

If its a birth deformity one would presume it must have been caused by the mother being exposed to a chemical of some sorts.

That was the article I'd seen, too. Interesting that a parasitic flat worm might cause an extra limb to grow. Weird!

Amphibians can regenerate limbs like this in some circumstances , it's particularly common in newts and salamanders and in response to a broken/ partially severed limb.there has also been reports of a virus causing limb deformities in anurans which has been highlighted over the last 8 or so years. Amphibians are very sensitive to their environment and as such are good " indicator "species that something is wrong.

Yeah I'd agree, leg got damaged and a new one grew back. Maybe the old one might fall off properly eventually.
