    • I was bitten by a horse fly and my whole ankle swelled up for 3 days. Really hurt to walk, so not surprised horses don't like them either

        • Carpenter bee on a cosse violette bean - a huge yet gentle solitary bee that has a nasty habit of drilling into the side of beans and peas to get the nectar.

A total contrast to this delicate wasp with an amazing long abdomen and tail. No idea which wasp it is!

                • I saw this today, not sure what it is but it was bigger than a normal wasp. Any ideas?

                  • A hoverfly of some sort I would think - no antenna so not a wasp?

                    • A rare visitor to my garden. I used to get lots a few years ago, but very thin on the ground recently. A juvenille I think.

                            • Oh that's exciting! Thanks Martin. I didn't know they were something different, there are about 6 of them hanging around. Nice to know wildlife are loving the flowers too

                              • Lovely butterfly pictures, folks.

Slightly off topic, but can anyone suggest a good field guide for butterflies? I have the Collins guide to insects in GB and Europe but it is a little thin on butterflies. I've not found a French one I like, either!
