Hey Nicos, yes not a great photo but didnt want to dazzle the poor little thing with the flash! Weve been out all day at a bbq, just got back and put a bowl of water out for them. My daughter wants us to build them a little house tomorrow so thats Sunday morning sorted! Ive just seen you can buy hedgehog biscuits so thats a good enough reason to go for a mooch round the garden centre tomorrow!Originally posted by Nicos View Post^^^ a hedgehog!
(I can just make out his lovely nose
)
Lovely!
Remember to leave water out for him in this weather....he may come back more often if you are the only supplier of water in your neighbourhood

It's a female, they are usually brown and black whereas the males look more black and white, size can come into it and females will get larger, they are now growing young in them to be born in the autumn.Originally posted by Small pumpkin View PostThis beautiful adder was in the garden this afternoon.

I didn't get to close she didn't seem very happy being spotted.
Made sure the dogs didn't meet her. That wouldn't of ended well.
I'm guessing female because of the size.
Just to add(sorry) there are regular fatalities in our local Glens when quite big dogs have been bitten, Adders aren't aggressive, but will defend themselves and have the weapon to do so.Last edited by burnie; 03-07-2019, 09:46 PM.

I did get a lot closer to her when I first saw her because I thought she was a peace of rope the dogs had dragged out of the shed!( fun game apparently empty the shed and leave it lying around the garden! ) So I was very close to picking her up until I realised what she was! Hence the not getting to close with the camera. I know of a few dogs getting bitten around here. And my two are the sort of idiots that would try to play with it ! A couple of year ago I had to stop my chickens playing tug of war with one! How no chickens or me got bitten that day I'll never know !Originally posted by burnie View PostIt's a female, they are usually brown and black whereas the males look more black and white, size can come into it and females will get larger, they are now growing young in them to be born in the autumn.

There are adders in the fields near me. The local vets have advice on what to do if your dog is bitten https://www.heathvets.co.uk/blog/national-blog?id=30787

Thanks for posting this. We have changing insect life this year and I've spotted one of these for the first time, coming for water. Could be more than one, of course... Surprisingly aggressive. Must have been thirsty.Originally posted by Small pumpkin View PostI think he's a odynerus spinipes. Which is a surprise because he's not supposed to be this far north!

Does anyone know what this insect is,I've never seen one before looks similar to a cucumber beetle in the internet images but its got orange on its head & those double dots on its shoulders. Its been sitting on a cucumber leaf for about three hours now,not eating it just guarding it it looks like? Theres only one of them but I wonder what does it want to eat,hopefully not plant
Ive left it alone because its probably a good guy as theres just one,except those leaves look like something might be having a go,I dont know,Ill keep an eye on it
