  • Kingfisher in garden

Just seen a kingfisher in my garden! So chuffed - never seen one before! Or expected to see one away from the river which is about quarter mile away. Of course no camera to hand and too far away for phone camera. Made my day.

I've only ever seen one as well, we were camping next to Elvaston Castle and there it was sat on a stump in the river, they really are beautiful birds.

I’ve never ‘properly’ seen one - only on a couple of occasions have I seen a flash of green/ blue next to a stream.

Taken a while back, they are not that common in Scotland.

I can't remember if you've seen this or not, an oil on canvas I did b.c(before Covid and before Cancer), the sun has bleached it a bit

                Lovely, burnie.

I've seen quite a few in my life and to be honest I hadn't realised they were rare even in their own environment. I have special memories of one. I was in France with my mum and dad and my dad absolutely insisted we go and visit the lavoir (public washing place) to see the kingfisher. I thought it a bit optimistic that it would turn up just when we were there. Plus it had been a couple of years since they last visited this particular village. But there it was and totally unphased by our presence. Just carried on sitting there, watchful. Caught something small, flew off and then returned. I don't know what it was taking from the lavoir pool. Insect larvae, spawn (though we were there a bit late for spawn) or maybe the locals put small fish in the pond for it. It made my dad's day that it was there.

Spotted a Comma butterfly in my garden.
I did take a pic but just cant get it to upload.
I think this may be the first time I saw one of these.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
