  • Duckweed covering pond

    Hi All
My first post in this fascinating forum
My wildlife pond (no fish) is teeming with tadpoles but covered entirely with duckweed. The pond plants and waterlily leaves struggle up through it. My son keeps saying 'ugghh that pond looks horrible' and I keep saying 'it's for the wildlife'.
I can't use a net because of the tadpoles. Using a cane doesn't make any impact on it. Should I just leave it?
On another subject, in previous years I've found a few frogs dead through (I believe) redleg disease. Is this disease waning at all?

Scoop the duckweed out, put on compost heap (use your fingers)

Use a small (children's) fishing net to scoop the duckweed out. Empty the net beside the pond and leave it for 20 minutes or so before putting on the compost heap. That way any pondlife you've scooped up will have a chance to make it back to the water instead of the compost.

        Duck weed or blanket weed?

Duck weed has two or so little leaves (bit like seed leaves) floats on top of the water

Blanket weed is long and hair like and as name suggests, blankets every thing!!! and grows more 'under' the water.
