  • Courgettes: 1. An actual courgette that grew on a plant. That I planted. And not one that got to 2 inches long and then rotted and fell off because apparently it didn't see the point of growing flowers of both sexes AT THE SAME TIME. Nor one that got to 3.5 inches and then mysteriously rotted. A proper, glorious comedy-p****-shaped actual courgette. I thought it would never happen.

I'm still suspicious of the concept of gluts of courgettes though, because I've tried to grow them on and off for about 4 years. This one I've grown successfully has brought me to an average of one fruit per six plants. Or £9 each, not counting the compost or planters.

    • How do you water them mistlepie?

Mine are rampant at the moment with all this sunshine, they are getting a good watering at the end of each day, I don't water them all over though, I aim the hose at the core of the plant and they get a good soaking at the roots. I try to avoid watering the fruit or leaves as I don't want to damage the flowers.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

      • Mistlepie, where did you buy your seeds? Harrods???

Today, I've picked 3 courgettes, 2 cucumbers and the first Armenian cucumber. Nearly missed it - I thought it was a dead leaf!

                  • None for me so far, but my squash and cucumbers (both of which I got going a bit late) have both started to flower properly so I live in hope!

                      • I may be adding Honey boat squash soon. Not sure when they're ready to pick as I haven't grown them before.

                        Meanwhile, my totals :-

                        Courgettes - 125 +5 = 130

                        Yellow Crookneck squash - 7 + 1 = 8

                        Beth Alpha Cucumbers 51 + 2 = 53

                        Armenian Cucumbers = 1

                        • Courgettes 23+3=26
                          Big cucs 4+2=6
                          Little cucs 22+1=23
                          Summer crookneck 1

Only problem is some of the big ones are quite bitter. They get plenty of water and regular feeding so can only assume it's a heat issue - in a different GH to little ones which have largely been fine.

Also a different variety to the one I usually grow - will go back to wautoma next year (only didn't grow them this year as lost my seeds!

Have a trombo which could be picked but interested to see how long it gets while still remaining slender.

Well I've broken my duck - I left it in the middle of the path and stood on it.

Got distracted by the 5 courgettes I just harvested.
