Bigmal, I could never get tired of that frame.... I just about drool at it! Have you got any pics of it fully clad, as it were?

I don't have any photos from last year but I will be including it in the 2017 Calendar.

You've already come up with the idea yourself but squash, pumpkin and Tromboncino

I may just stick with Beans as I already have a dedicated Squash Structure.

I wish I had space for a frame like yours BM. I'd be growing tomatoes up it, but then I can never have too many tomatoes.

Nice and simple. How tall are the canes and are they attached at the top to each other or anything else?

How many beans do you plant per pot?

One bean per cane - although I plant 2 in and see who is the toughest. Yes, there is a circular thingy ma gig at the top which I bought a few years ago but decicded that I could make a similar contraption out of a plastic milk bottle. The canes are 8 footers.

I don't freeze anything so 4 planters are enough, planted 2 weeks apart for us.

Last year I made a bamboo frame for my alderman peas and grew them up strings like I do for tomatoes. It's still in good nick so I've just moved it up a bed this year and will do the same except that I will put strings closer together and aim to get more succession. The pic shows it in last years bed without netting but it will be netted to keep the birds off, the fleece was used as a wind break as they went out in less than ideal conditions. This year we have Lord Leicester, Champion Of England, Bijou Tall Giant Sugar Pea, Ne Plus Ultra.

I'm currently weaving/knotting(?) my own pea netting out of plastic hemp rope. It's kind of a thing of beauty (in my eyes anyhow) but I really must get a move on and get it finished. I also started making it for the dimensions of the raised bed but my wee plot beds are a different size. No way I was unknotting it all though.

Not for want of trying BM. 4 years ago I applied for a plot in the village. There are 20 plots and I was no. 20 on the waiting list. I was told that the average turnover rate was 1 plot a year. If they are right I will be over 70 when my name gets to the top of the list

I bought & tried 2 of those arches last year, and one windy weekend found them flat on their sides, with beans ripped from the soil/crop ruined *sad*They just don't seem strong enough for more exposed sites
I have one of those ebay polytunnel frames (cover rotted away years ago) and I tie my canes up along both sides of it. Canes and frame together make for a very strong structure.

I've some of the stock fencing mesh (similar to the one SP shown) I was keeping aside for this as well as some 5cm x 10cm hole fence mesh left over from the front fence. Should have just about enough to do it. It won't be entirely covered but enough for a decent sprawl area to shade the area underneath which will have a couple of chairs and possibly a table.


But first I have to clear out all the junk in the houses, remove the shattered glass, clean up the shards from the soil and possibly take up some of the slabs inside (although I could just plant on the outside) (a reminder of the state of the houses at the mo - I haven't done much on them yet)

Instead of you lumbering me with your junk, I've got some stock mesh which you are welcome to from my junk pile!

If you are leaving the three together in that position, I would add a single tie lat to the top to keep them square and make them more rigid.

Unless you want them to be more inkeeping with the angle the shed is leaning at!

Like the bean frame arch johnjohn. I just may copy that idea on my Inca plot to give a bit of height.

When I first got my plot I made a 25ft long hooped tunnel out of Hazel Saplings. It worked well as a walk through between 2 beds. Unfortunately I don't have any pics to show it ( I used to).

These are the cottonwool nest mangetout, some of which will climb - and I'll add strings, netting or summat when they start romping.



There's a leaning row off canes to the south of the GH that supported squashes last year. They keep the sun off the GH and keep it cooler. May be beans there this year - or may not


This rustic work of art has been used for beans. There's a 4' wire fence at the bottom to give them a start.



Apart from these, every bit of wirefencing is up for grabs as a random pea/bean support

The stuff with the big holes? I may rake that officer hands then. I've plenty of chicken wire but the holes are too small for the beans to wrap around and the larger open mesh would be better than the 5x10 for the roof- this can now go onto a bean/squash arch.

I'm going to do a wigwam for the tall peas - I'll use the chicken wire for a leaf mould pile later in the year.

All parts now painted and assembled for transporting to the allotment for final assembly and erection, all the ends of the struts & joints are numbered.
