Don't generally like harming anything but no problems with spearing slugs on a fork or crushing them under my boot. That said the frog army from the wildlife pond really does keep the population down and if the amount of frog spawn there at the weekend is anything to go by then it'll be great this year

Alison, really must get to grips with my inherited pond. Love frogs and the birds seem to congregate there too. If frogs neutralise the slug threat, bring on the frogs!!!

There were two HUGE areas of frog spawn there when I looked on Sunday, there's usually plenty but this is definitely more than normal. Meant to take a photo but forgot, will have to remember this weekend.

Difficult isn't it? But this is exactly how the farmers feel when we fight to get neonicitonoids etc banned... It's a real dilemma, not sure how we address it

Didn't post that to turn this thread political, just thought it needed to be said as wasn't expecting that answer at the time. When the staff member said about the EU banning stuff and I turned around and looked at the shelves there were loads of gaps.

Don't get me wrong banning DDT and some of the other nasty stuff was correct but a lot of stuff they are stopping us using now is just crazy and is nowhere near as bad.

As for slugs and snails, I pick em up and throw them in the stream that runs past our allotments along the border, if they survive that and crawl out alive then they deserve to live. Might give em a decent death and put beer traps down this year, let em have 'death by hangover'.

I go slug truffling most nights when my garden is in full swing. They are popped in a tub then tipped over the wall at the front garden into the stream for the frogs
