Chillies - what are you growing/overwintering?

I think the hottest one I'm growing is either scotch bonnet or numex twilight. Im not that bothered about the super hots. Yet.

Scotch bonnet is the warmer of the two ( I'm 75% sure )

That's very nice of your friend all you have to do now is keep it alive until it can go into your friends greenhouse. Which will be mid April at the very earliest.

Scotch bonnet are more than hot enough for me! Having said that, I am going to try a couple of superhots next year but mostly for the challenge of growing them. If I get any pods off them then they'll be inflicted on my OH and a couple of his friends who fancy themselves as chilliheads.

My micro grow light garden is a very slow process. Its coming up to 3 weeks and there might be a showing of the red cherry selection, the others nothing. I've moved the light lower, it does state about 10cm but I have probably moved it to about 6cm I think!

It says its a self watering thingy so I have just topped with water probably about twice and hoping the watering mats are absorbing enough water. Yesterday I gave it a little spray of water on top for the first time as I don't want to over water them.

It has space for 4 pots so I have been rotating them on a daily bases so they get a fair bit of light but now have changed the rotating every other day.

They might be moving to a new home upstairs into the loft conversion as I think the conservatory is to cold for them, as there is no heat in there.

And finally the chilli plant that I pruned way to early is showing new shoots, just been giving a little water every now and then.


I am trying not to be to impatient with them, but you can guess I am driving the family mad!!!

Show us some photos jacks, it would help explain your set up ( I'm not very bright ). Have you got seeds, seedlings or plants in your micro grow light garden. What ever it is 3 weeks this time of year really isn't a long time, chillies aren't known for their speediness . One last suggestion......... Sit on your hands and stop fiddling with them, you're just going to annoy them . The chilli shuffle will be fine once a week

Yes you are all making up for the fact I only have 4 chilli stumps in pots in the spare bedroom.

SP, I'm trying to sit on my hands, the last of my chillies are finally turning red. I saved a couple of plants after my greenhouse got badly hit by frost. My two red Manzanos were gonas, but ive since found a trinidad scorpion that didn't get hit quite so bad so he's made it onto the kitchen windowsil, along with a lemon drop. The other 3 plants ive got are annums - a variegata, just a few more pods left on him, the Piquin Bailey which is dropping pods every minute - this plant is unusual in that when the chillies are ripe they just fall off. It's a brilliant plant, grown well even though I started it very late but I'm not sure if losing its pods over the GH floor is a good idea for me. They just get stepped on the last one on the windowsil is the royal black - lovely dark purple/black leaves with little pods that are surprisingly very very hot!
No lights here so I won't start plant till mid Jan at the earliest!

I'm also not sure what you have in this system. Is it seeds? If so, they don't need light until after they have germinated, they just need warmth. So a cold, bright place is no good for chilli seeds, you need a warm one, and it doesn't matter if it's light or dark.

Caveat: seeds of some other types of plants do need light for germination, but chillies don't.

What are the 10, and what's on the list at the moment?

I've already got far, far too many varieties of seed to grow next year and yet I've just ordered some more. Hopefully the foil-packeted ones will be OK for future years.

I've just had to look up your Piquin Bailey, interesting chilli. Initially I thought dropping of ripe fruit was a good idea, but after you said you stand on them I'd probably do the same. Your Royal black is a stunning plant. I'd love to try something like that. Closest I've got is fillus blue and next year pretty in purple.
Definitely only trying to over winter the 6 plants, I emptied out the rest of my tubs today.
Trevor was almost pot bound when I emptied him out. So if Simon makes it through the winter he is going to be a nightmare to re-pot.

So revising your list up or down? My varieties have gone up a little, number of plants is going up so much I'm starting to scare myself

I've came to the conclusion that I'm probably not going to have the room in the house to grow all my chillies all year so was just wondering if one of my plastic growhouses would be good enough baring in mind I'm in north east England.

Your chillies Probably aren't going to like it in the plastic green house. But if you've got no where else for them it's worth giving it a go. Could you wrap the pot in bubble wrap? And some fleece over the plant.
I hate binning chilli's, but I just don't have the space for all of them.

I only plan on moving them out there come June when its "warm" and when the plants are up and away. They'll all be started indoors and spend the first 4 or 5 months in the house if that makes any difference? I'll only move them out there when they go into their last pots (10 litres) and there Isn't room for all of them on my window sills.
