Interesting about Musselburgh Kristen, that backs up my "feeling" that they are a slightly stringier variety.

      When do you sow, Kristen?

I sow mine in Feb, into large plastic boxes , they are 9 inches deep and like kristen i sow them individualy and then re- sow any non starters. The box then goes next to our boiler until germination, then into the GH and finaly outside, still in the box, in April. Planting out is then in june. Last year was a bad year for leeks, i had lots of bolting, dont know why.
As an experiment i did not puddle them in but just filled the holes in. i found no soil in the plants whatsoever. This might be because my beds are compost rich, maybe in soil it would have been different.
