They're not vine weevils then. Could be pollen beetles Pollen Beetle - Meligethes aeneus | NatureSpot

I think these sound like like thunder bugs/fruitflies type of thing....and similar to woodlice are only opportunistic. ie They just go for damaged by slug/bird or rotting ones.
I have never seen flea beetle on straws (if that is what we're driving at with oil seed rape line)
