I tasted the very first cucumber I have ever grown yesterday (burpless tasy green) - simply wonderful taste and the 8 inch cuc was finished in about 30 seconds by ravenous children. Success!

Is the skin toughness down to irregular or lack of water? Growing some Masterpiece outdoor cukes and so far one was and one wasn't tough...

That might be the case. We've been picking ours at about 3 inches long, which is enough for a salad. The skins haven't been noticeably tough, but we do have to rub the prickles off.

They usually get picked at around 5 inch, I daren't give them any more water after drowning/ killing some last year.

Well 5" is tiny enough - maybe it's as a consequence of it being an outdoor ridge type. I am growing Beth Alpha in the greenhouse and they are delicious - have been giving the hens the marketmore, which I'm rather disappointed with TBH.

Middle sister in Sainsbury's fruit and veg aisle: You should grow cucumbers (and Mushrooms)

Me: But they look like snozzcumbers....

Thank you, my lovelies, for allowing me to make an educated and informed decision. Knew this thread would in useful. You are all wonderful.
